"Star Trek XI" gets another update

By: Karl Schneider

Source: Sci Fi Wire

According to Sci Fi Wire, a script for the upcoming Star Trek XI prequel has now been completed and submitted to the studio for final approval.  If the script meets approval, the studio plans to aim for a Christmas 2008 release.

The site also mentioned that no decisions have been made on the film's budget, casting or production start date as they all are subject to a final script being approved by the studio.

The film is rumored to focus on the early years of Capt. James T. Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy.

KJ's Take:  It seems that the majority of uses on this site are very apathetic toward this film, which is not a good sign for it's box office potential.

It seems like Abrams has a lot of work to do in order to win over the masses, but I have every confidence he will do just that.

my problem with this is that we are taking the franchise backwards... come on, give us something new, create new characters, conflicts and worlds, thats what star trek needs right now...

All right folks. This news headline is about to get 10 times more exciting, cuz kjsucks6996 is here to post. I know you were worried. But its cool. I'm here. Star trek 11. Oh god its gonna suck. It might have a chance if not for jj abrams. But he'll ruin it. Paramount listen to me, cuz your about to get some free tips to make u some money. Check it out....They Live 2. Buy the rights and get this sequel out asap. Cuz it'll make billions. I mean the first was unbelievable. And just to tie this in to the topic. Cast Jeri Ryan in there somewhere. But make sure shes topless. I'll expect my residual check in the mail.

"According to Sci Fi Wire, a script for the upcoming Star Trek XI reboot ..."

It's NOT a reboot. It;s a prequel. Abrams said himself that it will respect continuity.

Let's see... a couple of things they could touch on here. One, Kirk was the youngest man to ever become Captain in Starfleet so perhaps this will be the event that triggers that. Also, as revealed in "Wrath of Khan", he was also the only Starfleet cadet to ever beat the Kobayashi Maru scenario test... though he did so by cheating. So maybe those two elements will be shown onscreen. Still... while I'm fond of Star Trek, I agree with everyone else: Show us something NEW! Riker is now the captain of the Titan, let's see that! Enterprise and Titan facing some new threat...

Guess we'll see what happens in 2008

Really the powers that be should be able to make a Star Trek movie once a year no matter the budget. Look at Newvoyages for example. Even Harry butthole Potter was almost at a year a movie. Saw is at a year a movie. There is no much unused talent for Trek it's not even funny and the scripts could go anywhere to crappy prequel to cool updates past Voyager. Even straight to DVD movies would be cool.

I'm uneasy about about this project because of the recasting of Kirk and Spock. Still, I'm a Trek fan and I think J.J's a talented and creative force, so I know I'll see this. I'm hoping Shatner and Nimoy will reprise their signature roles if for no other reason, to give fans a nod. I would much rather see a movie based in the future of the Star Trek universe. I always hoped to see a movie based on the "Conspiracy" episode. A new captain of a new Enterprise (maybe the son of Riker and Troi) goes to war with the invading alien horde. I've posted all of this before and don't want to sound like a broken record. I'm looking forward to seeing the bits and pieces of this project as it moves forward.

Any of you remember the days before the internet when we got all of our movie news from magazines like Star Log? Sometimes I miss those days, because we know so much about the movies today that some of the magic is gone.
