Plot Summary: "Lost" creators-writers-producers J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk are bringing an 11th installment of the popular "Star Trek" franchise to the big screen. Burk, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will executive produce.
September 12, 2006 - According to ComingSoon.net, Brent 'Data' Spiner has ruled out any possible return to the franchise.
"I don't think I should play Data anymore," said Spiner. "I think I'm too old to play him anymore to be honest. I think it would look stupid putting that make-up on me at this point. There certain characters that I think work in a youthful way and I think I really skated along the edge in the last couple movies as it was.
Spiner continued to say, "Having said that, you'll see the movie now and there I'll be in all the make-up... then you'll know I got a very sweet deal."
August 31, 2006 - According to the Toronto Sun, Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner might be involved with J.J. Abrams' upcoming film STAR TREK XI.
"The head of production at Paramount called my agency to tell them about this project and they are aware of Bill's and my contribution to the franchise, and they'd like us to know they might want some involvement," said Nimoy.
"It was all very, very general," he continued, "they might possibly want Bill and I to set up the story as a flashback. But that's just conjecture on my part."
August 11, 2006 - TV Guide posted an interview with J.J. Abrams in which he talks about the upcoming season of LOST and his upcoming film STAR TREK XI.
TV Guide writes:
TV Guide: What can you tell us about the new season?
Abrams: A lot of the season's already figured out, and it's incredible. The stories are amazing.
TV Guide: Will you have time to be involved in Lost's third season?
Abrams: I definitely look to be more involved this season, certainly more than I was last season [when directing Mission: Impossible III]. I look forward to directing an episode, and I'm planning on writing some.
TV Guide: C'mon. Give us something.
Abrams: Desmond will definitely be back. He's not dead.
TV Guide: How exciting is it to find yourself in charge of resuscitating the Trek franchise?
Abrams: It's sort of surreal but wonderful. I'm producing and may direct.
TV Guide: It's been reported that the film will focus on Kirk and Spock's early days and include their meeting at Starfleet Academy. You've said that was not entirely accurate. What parts are?
Abrams: I think we have an incredible story, but we've sort of promised each other we wouldn't talk about the specifics yet. But I can say that we're actively working on it, we're in the middle of breaking the story, and it's coming along great. I'd be happy to start sooner than Paramount thinks, but not a moment before it's ready.
TV Guide: Why the shroud of secrecy?
Abrams: It's way premature. Anything I say, people will read into it and make assumptions. But we have an incredible beginning of a really dramatic story, and it very much honors the canon of Star Trek. On the other hand, it won't be like anything you've seen before.
July 22, 2006 - The first poster for J.J. Abrams STAR TREK film has been released. You can view it above, or below in the related images section.
June 20, 2006 - Will MATT DAMON get beamed up? Could happen. I'm told J.J. ABRAMS is very interested in casting the Oscar-winning Damon as a young Captain Kirk in the upcoming 'Star Trek' movie that he's directing and producing. He's so interested that he's apparently already sought support from the original Kirk, WILLIAM SHATNER. "Shatner gave his blessing," my source says. "J.J. got his approval." Damon first popped up in Trekkie circles as soon as the Abrams-'Star Trek' deal was announced. Rumor had it that the new movie would center on Kirk and Spock's early days at a space academy. "J.J. wants Damon as Capt. Kirk," my source reports. "He really loves the idea." [Yahoo!]
April 21, 2006 - Variety reports Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams has been tapped to direct Paramount's upcoming Star Trek feature. The next installment of the popular sci-fi franchise will focus on the Starfleet's early days. Abrams will reunite with Mission writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to pen the project, which is scheduled to boldly go into theaters in 2008. [Variety]
