Star Wars 3D Prequels Cancelled

No Episode 2 and 3 in 3D

This bit of Star Wars news really comes as no surprise. is reporting that Disney has cancelled the release of both Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 3D. After a poor box office draw of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D Disney is now focusing on the next trilogy.

Deadline had this to report: “This surprising decision follows the underwhelming box office performance of Episode I: The Phantom Menace re-released in 3D in February 2012. It debuted to only $23M domestically but maybe even more importantly hardcore fans felt it was yet another craven cash grab by George Lucas. Back in September 2010, Lucasfilm and then-distributor Fox announced that all 6 films in the Star Wars franchise would be converted to 3D. Episode II: Attack Of The Clones (first released on May 16, 2002) was to hit theaters in 3D on September 20th, 2013, while Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith (first released on May 19, 2005) was to play in 3D on October 11, 2013”.

I read this as a step forward. I am huge Star Wars fan and found no need to revisit a film that only let me down, story-wise. Disney wants a positive attitude towards their recent purchase, not a bad a memory. I also look at it this way, the article only mentions the prequels in 3D being canceled. It makes no mention of the holy trilogy.

That sucks. I wanted to see the entire franchise again on the big screen and in 3D.

I don't see why they can focus on Ep 7 and still do the re-releases and time them so Ep 6 is released about 6 months before 7.

Btw I believe the film made over 75mil worldwide.

OK I just went to the official site and they're not cancelled, simply postponed. Maybe they are just delaying to coincide with Ep 7' s release

They dont want the stench of the prequels fresh on people's mind when Ep7 rolls out.

Wiseguy 1/28/2013 5:33:09 PM

Well the original trilogy would be the last shown prior to Ep 7

 I prefer IMAX!!!!

Probably got cold feet when Finding Nemo 3D didn't make much, and Monsters Inc 3D isn't either. But as other sources have stated, it's not cancelled, merely postponed. Can't wait to see Slave Leia in 3D!

There seems to be good Star Wars news every day!

Enough milking the old stuff and focus on the new movies and TV show.

I was waiting for the real trilogy to come out in 3D years ago, sad news for me.  I for one like 3D.
