Star Wars Celebration Europe II: Press Night
What we can expect from SWCE2
By Robert T. Trate
July 26, 2013
Maniacs, I am asking for a little leeway here today. I have flown half way around the world to participate in Star Wars Celebration Europe II. I’ve yet to go to bed and by the time you look at these pictures, I will have finally slept and started the first official day here.
Though on a fun note, my connecting flight from Heathrow to Dusseldorf Germany did have two interesting passengers on it. Sitting just a few rows in front of me was none other than C-3PO himself, Anthony Daniels, and the Emperor, Ian McDiarmid. This already places this trip above my first Comic Con where William Hung was the on the plane.
They, like myself, were en route to the biggest Star Wars party on the planet. That’s right, Nerf Headers, this year’s Star Wars Celebration is in Europe. The press had a special advance questionnaire for the stars that would be reuniting from Return of the Jedi. As you know, this year is the 30th Anniversary of the film. Special screenings were held in Los Angeles to celebrate as well as at the Alamo Drafthouse in Texas. Now, the European community will get its chance to see the final chapter in the original Star Wars Trilogy. There will be an outdoor screening large enough to accommodate the attendees. However, a sad note was delivered very early on. David Collins, from Lucasfilm, told us that there would be no new news about upcoming Star Wars projects (Episode 7). Yet, he was quick to relate to us that Star Wars Rebels will have a few announcements. Look for that here on Mania.com.
This is is the 14th year of the original Star Wars Celebration that began back in Denver, Colorado. As many of you know and remember, it started out great until the heavens came down, a fact that Anthony Daniels reminded us all about as he expressed how great it was to be here in Germany. Anthony Daniels and Ian McDiarmid were joined in the press room by Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Jeremy Bulloch, Warwick Davis, and Peter Mayhew.
When asked what Star Wars Celebration meant to each of them and about the legacy of Return of the Jedi, each had a different answer. Davis replied that this was a chance to see everyone from the cast again. Mayhew enjoys the interactions with the fans. Though when asked what was the weirdest thing they ever autographed, one mentioned a Pez dispenser and another, a man’s chest. Outside of those odd occurrences, they agreed that Star Wars has endured because of the power of myth and good storytelling. However, none of the stars had an answer for what the proper order was for kids to watch the films. One suggestion did come out from the crowd: Episodes 4, 3, 5, and then 6. Where that leaves the others is your decision.
Wicket himself, Warwick Davis will be the main MC this year and he promised some surprises for his fellow cast mates and the fans.
THE SHOWROOM FLOOR:
If you've ever been to Comic Con in San Diego, you know that Lucasfilm always has an impressive display of characters, footage, toys, and Star Wars bric-a-brac. Picture that in your mind and then imagine only Star Wars filling the rest of the Comic Con floor.
The following displays are by the 501st Legion.
This Garrison hails from the Northern Territory known as Belgium.
Jabba’s Palace and the Catina Bar.
Here are some toy displays that were on hand at the Hasbro Booth.
Here are few new highlights from Hasbro’s New wave of Star Wars toys featuring the Black Series.
Check out the Darth Maul with legs from The Clone Wars.
The Rancho Obi-Wan Display (it was roped off so more pictures to come).
Here are just a few samples of what LEGO was setting out for display.
