George had met him and Carrier Fisher over the summer to discuss the new movies. I'm guessing they will be involved somehow.

Say it isn't so...I can't post the link but see below.  If that hack Lindelofs gets a hold of the script, these movies are finished before they begin.

Brad Bird and fan-favorite film writer Damon Lindelof are teaming up for a new project at Disney. Bird, coming off of his first live-action with Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, is set to direct the mysterious large scale sci-fi project 1952. Whether that's just a codename or an actual year related to the story, we're not yet sure, but the project "has multi-platform aspirations" meaning Disney wants it for theme parks, retail stores and theaters. It'll no doubt be a "big tentpole" movie, and with these two storytellers leading the way, it is definitely something to watch for.  Now we know that Brad Bird is definitely on-board to direct, but other than that, still no plot details. Anyone? It sounds like Disney has something on their hands that could be huge, and they're making sure to build it from the ground up properly, with the right talent top to bottom. I just wish we knew any extra details about what it was actually about.

WTF?  Theme park and retail store aspirations, sounds like Star Wars to me.  1952 is probably a code name like Blue Harvest, etc.  I hope to movie Gods this isn't true but it's not a large leap unfortunately.

 Lindelof is a big Star Wars fan, that's what is needed for the new movies.  I'd be down if he teams up with Bird.  However, Disney wants all their movies for parks and stores so that doesn't really point to SW.  When Brave came out they made the meet and greet for Merida, and they have one now for Wreck It Ralph with his stuff selling in the parks too.

 I agree with Hanso on this one.  We saw what fandom was able to do with The Muppets at Disney.  I still think The Muppets is every bit as good as The Muppet Movie and Great Muppet Caper.  I was even able to forget that some of them don't sound right - well, except for Sam the Eagle...they really need to find a better person to voice him.  Anyway, yeah, go for people who care about the source material, and magic can happen.

Lindelof was apparantly shocked as much as anyone to hear the news on Tuesday, even so he's not a terrible writer, certainly wouldn't look bad if Brad Bird directs his story!

Look, I'm sticking by what I said earlier, EVERYONE is well aware of the complaints and problems with the prequel trilogy and there is a good general sense of what is needed for success with these movies such as a return to more practical filmaking: real sets, make up and puppetry etc. and the need for more than one person challenging the production and calling shots.  The latter being the most important and it's a guarantee with Disney that we will get a team running these movies and not just one man.  Having Lucas around to consult and having his blessing is key as well, these would never be made again if he wasn't consentual, he has stated that strict instructions are in his will to never allow features to be made once he's gone.

It's looking more and more like this new movie series with have little if anything to do with the characters and story from the original trilogy.  I'm becoming obsessive again.......

 I dont think those restrictions would still apply.  Disney wouldnt have paid so much $ if they could only make movies if Lucas was alive.  At least i dont think they would.

I meant to say that he had those instructions before he sold to Disney, there is no way those exist now cuz you're right, no way a sale would happen without the continuation of the movie franchise and that's why it went hand in hand with the announcement of the sale.

Yoda Begins!!  I love it!  I'm thinking that nothing is off the table at this point, we very well might see that story or at least a hint to his species at some point.  I'm expecting the roaring marketing machine and presence of the 80's SW phenomenon to get rolling again, it didn't quite get there with the prequels for obvious reasons.

After absorbing the news and hearing so much about this the past few days, here is how I would do it. Perhaps some of you don't like it but I think it would satisfy all fans.

1) The new episodes are brand new. Not related to the books. No R2 or 3PO or tie ins. The universe is huge. Have a new generation of jedi and scoundrels. Bring back the humor (Han and Lando style) and have fun and not worry about conitnuity or tie ins. As an hommage to the originals though, maybe have Hamill cameo in a jedi holocron or something like that.

2) The people that want the book adaptations but realize the actors are too old. Why not animated? I believe this is the last season of Clone Wars. What if you have the same team work on the good book series. There is a ton of good material out there. 1 season can be the Heir to the Empire trilogy, another can be the Jedi Academy, etc... You can then use Mark Hamill's voice as Luke, and Daniels as 3PO, etc....

I still say that Luke should be the new Yoda figure in the movies training the New Jedi Order that centers around the Solo twins. It is simple and effective. The Solo twins can be the new center of the Skywalker story line. There are the new faces we want that also includes the old school characters too. To have the twins you would have to have the mom and dad, who are Leia and Han. They need not be the center of the action or story-line, but to not have them at least have them as secondary characters would be lame.

But again, who will be the new head villain? Who will be the new Emperor and Darth Vader?
