We had heard rumblings of a character named Kanan, but we knew nothing else. Now we know that Kanan is being referred to as “The Cowboy Jedi” and voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr. Yet, there is even more Maniacs. USA Today broke the news about this latest character to join the Star Wars Universe. Check out the video below where Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg discuss this new character and how he must embrace his Jedi upbringing in this dark time.

"He saw the destruction of his way of life at the hands of Darth Vader and the Empire," says Dave Filoni, executive producer of Star Wars Rebels. "He doesn't know how [the Jedi] will move forward and survive now.."

Kanan is the "perceived head of the crew of The Ghost”. Which means there may actually be a Captain of the ship. Will Kanan have to rise the occasion? Star Wars Rebels begins in the fall of 2014.

Press Release: Not every guardian of peace and justice was lost to the tragedy of Order 66. Introducing Kanan, a survivor of the Emperor’s Jedi purge and one of the main characters of Star Wars Rebels.
Kanan, voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr., is a less traditional Force-wielder than fans are used to seeing. He carries a blaster, is a little sarcastic, and keeps his past a secret. “I like to call Kanan ‘the cowboy Jedi,’” says executive producer Dave Filoni. As shown in this video, his Jedi robes are long gone, replaced with armor and a holster, though a samurai-like ponytail hints at his Jedi Knight origins.
In Star Wars Rebels, set between Episode III and IV, Kanan has been underground for years, evading the Empire. If the Imperials become aware of his existence “he’s going to get killed,” says art director Kilian Plunkett. He still has his lightsaber, but no longer uses it for fear of revealing his true identity -- and has ultimately forsaken the ways of the Jedi Order.
Star Wars Rebels will show Kanan’s journey as he rediscovers himself, just as a rebellion begins to form against the Empire. According to Filoni, “He’s a gunslinger that needs to put the gun away and pick up the sword again, and fight for noble causes and selfless causes.” But what will happen when he chooses to reignite his Jedi weapon, fighting once again for a greater purpose?
The video closes with a tease of what’s to come: an encounter with the nightmarish Inquisitor, the Empire’s Jedi hunter.

This does seem really cool. I was afraid this series wouldn't have any jedi in it because they were all killed at this time. The series wouldn't have been as interesting to me if they weren't there. For me, the whole core of the Star Wars universe are the jedi, the sith, and any other Force users involved with its mysteries.

This looks awesome and is in good hands with the Clone Wars team. I also love the fact that we have new lead characters finally. Seems like Kanan is similar to Cade Skywalker in Star Wars Legacy.

My only issue is that once again, we are in prequel territory.  Prequels can be fun but limit story telling or contradict the current canon. In this case here, we were always under the impression Luke was the last jedi and Vader killed all of them. maybe Kanan will eventually get killed by Vader or live in exile a la Obiwan before the events of ANH but at the same time, if his impact on the Rebel Alliance is huge (he has a rebel insignia in one of the videos) then why was he forgotten in Star Wars history?

In Filoni we trust... Ahsoka, need I say more?

Oh yeah and Cad Bane for sure. But these new characters were still tied to the old ones like Obiwan, Anakin, Yoda, etc...

This one will be refreshing to see. New characters all around. Instead of Darth Vader, it's the Inquisitor (kudos for Filoni's team in digging these guys up. I know they were mentioned in the SW RPG by West End Games many years ago). Kanan, hsi crew, different ship, etc...

I'm just happy to see new legends born. No doubt if Kanan has a crew on the ship, they will be quite interesting archetypes. Brains, brawm, etc...

Give us a Zeltron female! (ok...too close to Legacy)

Despite being new characters, we will still most probably have special appearances by the likes of Boba Fett or any of the hunters, Vader, young Lando and Han for sure.

Am I the only person who is bored with jedi..?

Before ep 1 there was nothing that I wanted to see more.  But it's been done to death now...

I liked better the story of Force Unleashed as the genesis of the rebellion, but it looks like they are discarding that storyline, most likely Kannan has to die as a hero so it makes sense.

They had me when greg wiseman was announced as a show runner. Can't wait for this.

Really liked this brief video.  Listening to people describing the character..and then seeing sketches showing a number his facial expressions, etc.  Very exciting stuff...for young artists / illustrators to check out.

They could still tie in parts of the Force Unleashed storyline, they were hunting Jedi in that as well.
