Last weekend, at the New York Comic Con, Pablo Hidalgo hosted the Star Wars Rebels panel to a packed house. The big news revealed for the series came in two fold. The first being that the series will take place 14 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Which, if you do the math, means approximately 5 years before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. We have our time frame and that means the Empire is on the rise and looking to branch out into new territory. We will get to more on that in a moment. The second big piece of news was the revelation of the shows main villain, The Inquisitor (pictured below). Check out the full details/ press release here on
Now, we know that many of you could not get to the New York Comic Con. So, we here at Mania wanted to bring you all the sights that Hidalgo revealed about the new animated series. We have supplied as many details as possible on the images below. If you caught our coverage from Star Wars Celebration, that was only the tip of the iceberg.
There was no footage shown of the series. Thus far, all we have is the teaser trailer, which they didn’t even bother to show again at the Con. Here it is again if you missed it.

Hidalgo did reveal that the series is currently in pre-production on the animation end. The show is only a year away, but he did announce that it would premiere on the Disney Channel and then move over to Disney XD on a weekly basis. He was able to tell us that Simon Kinsberg (Sherlock Holmes, X-Men Days of Future Past) is writing the series premiere.

What got a huge round of applause was Hidalgo revealing the general excitement, with everyone involved, about finally being able to get to use the Empire. It hasn’t been touched upon since Return of the Jedi.

The first planet we will visit in the new series is Lothal (check the Star Wars wiki for more details). It is a frontier planet and one that will easily to succumb to the ways of the Empire. The pictures above reveal Lothal (conceptually) and already a requirement poster which has surfaced (above in red). This prompted Hidalgo to reveal the truth about the difference between Stormtroopers and Clone Troopers. The Empire will have done away with the growing of Clone Troopers by this point and will be recruiting new troops into their ranks. Their reason? According to Hidalgo (via George Lucas), Clone Troopers have too much individuality. Someone who enlists is more likely to follow orders.

A lot of the images we saw were not surprises. We knew that there were going to be Stormtroopers and TIE Fighter Pilots on the series. Then, Hidalgo revealed new troops and vehicles for the series.

A lighter moment of the panel came when Hidalgo asked “How does one get into the TIE Fighter?” After revealing that this was one of the biggest chain mail emails during pre-production, they decided that Darth Vader and the TIE Fighter Pilots get in through the top.

A new ship was also introduced based on Doug Chiang’s concept that would be a short range transport for TIE Fighters. Then, of course, we saw the new sleeker pre-Episode IV Star Destroyers.

Upon completion of these images Hidalgo revealed the concept art for The Inquisitor.

Rebels will be a break from the multiple story lines that happened in The Clone Wars. In fact, the story will stay with our cast of characters that reside on “The Ghost”. Rebels really will be a return to its Star Wars roots as the heroes will once again be the scrounging underdogs having only hope and conviction on their side.

The Fall of 2014 cannot get here soon enough.

Great stuff, Bob!

The new baddie looks like he could be from Clone Wars, but the troopers look far more realistic. THe visual styles are too different in that pic.

They obviously didn't do their homework if they had to have a conversation to decide how to get into a TIE fighter. It's been established about a thousand times over in various video games and EU books. I know they're doing their own thing but they still could at least LOOK at some of the EU stuff.

rogue3, they did... and they examined it wiith real pictures fromt he film and noticed that the rear hatches on Vader's TIE and the standard TIE don;t match... yet the interiors are identical

Love the Imperial ships with the TIES underneath!!!

This is the star wars cartoon I wanted as a child, Droids came close, but this looks awesome..!

I love it that they are using a lot of their early sketch work to make vehicles for this show.  Totally Awesome!  Oh and I own that troop transport.  I loved that toy.

I also loved droids.  Haven't seen it since a kid.  I almost bought it once just to see if I would still enjoy it and show it to my son, but when I heard they didn't have the theme song, I thought that was crap and I waited to see if they would release it with the theme.  Guess I sort of forgot about it then.

I wonder how the Inquisitor affects the Sith rule of two.

That Scout Walker looks like it's taken directly out of a Star Wars concept art book I have from the early 80's, pre-ESB. I believe that design was one of McQuarie's original sketches for what became the two legged walkers in ESB and more prominently in ROTJ... very cool!
