bob21b, I can't speak for the others, but as for myself, I'm a former Star Wars collector. I enjoyed collecting the Kenner figures. It was a very large line of action figures at the time, a challenge to collect, and fun to do so. When the new figures started rolling out in the late 1990s, I checked them out, but never bothered buying them. For some reason, I just had this sinking feeling that the line would become way too much of a pain in the ass, with all the limited editions, variations, short packed figures, etc. And the more I've seen the Star Wars line expand into a seemingly endless series, the more I'm glad I decided to "sit it out."
There was something about the finite number of original Kenner figures that made it an attractive and fun hobby. I'm not going to mock Lucas for continuing the line, or the collectors who buy them up because I understand the passion of collecting. So even though I don't collect the figures anymore, I do read these news items with a sort of interest - and even from the sidelines, these constant releases get to be fatiguing. I'm not so sure that the quip above about the "37th version of R2-D2" is too far from the truth.
And while I really don't think we needed a Cliff Claven action figure, I'm quite happy to see we finally have a "John Kerry in Hoth Gear" figure! OK, so just a little mockery... (and in all seriousness, it's a good likeness - I always thought that actor resembled John Kerry).
