STAR WARS Television Series Light Years Away

In an interview with If Magazine, producer Rick McCallum mentioned that a Star Wars live action TV series appears to still be a ways away. The show will be set in between Episode III and Episode IV and contain all new characters.

"We're interviewing writers, and seeing a lot of people, but I would say it wouldn't be happening for about eighteen months," McCallum said. "Don't believe a single thing [you've heard]. It happens between Episode III and Episode IV. It will be all new characters. It will be the missing twenty-year period during Luke growing up. Think about bounty hunter, that's all I can tell you. It's no one else that you will know. It's really early stages, and we haven't sat down to decide what direction to go."

McCallum also mentioned that the animated Star Wars TV show was about a year away and would follow on from where Star Wars: Clone Wars left off.

"McCallum also mentioned that the animated Star Wars TV show was about a year away and would follow on from where Star Wars: Clone Wars left off."

But didn't "Episode III" follow from where "Clone Wars" left off?

Yeah, but perhaps he means the series would pick up where the CLONE WARS series left off.

Sounds like a Tales of the Bounty Hunters type of series. Which would be pretty cool, it's an area of the Star Wars mythology that has only been hinted at in the movies. But, has been explored with more detail in the novels and in video games.

Star Wars without the characters we all grew up on is just another scifi series IMO. All the producers are going to do is play off the name "Star Wars." I want to see the characters I grew up with. The prequels were crap (I'll never forget how badly I laughed out loud when Darth Vader did the now-infamous "noooooooooooooo!" That was supposed to be the seminla moment of the series and it was a bad joke), but I'd still like to see a show built around Darth Vader's exploits. Now that would be a show I'd watch.

Rick McCallum: Worst YES Man in Hollywood

"Whazzat, George? You wanna go all green screen? Great idea! Annikan should make 3PO? Man, you're amazing! In a galaxy of trillions upon trillions of people of thousands of races you're gonna make all the Stormtroopers be clones of the dad of a bounty hunter that had 3 lines in the original trilogy just because fanboys creamed over his cool costume for 25 years? George, you've done it again! That's why you're a billionaire, boss! While you're at it, YOU should direct the new trilogy ... I mean, directing is such a strong suit for you!"

I haven't had my coffee yet.

ghouliemask... let's not forget about this one either: you want to write all three screenplays by yourself*, you're a writing genius, of course you should do it.

*Jonathan Hales did help write Episode II but Lucas is still given top honors.

Still can't wait to see what this looks like. It's an intersting project and I'm sure once it's out, I will like it regardless of who's writting it.

Thanks wessmith & sharpe95th

And excellent addition jwesty, I'd forgotten that. Point here, folks: Story is verryyy different from screenplay!

jedibanner- Sure, I'll watch it, and it might be kinda cool, but in the end, for me, if it ain't in the movies, it ain't cannon (and in the case of the prequel trilogy, even if it's in a movie it ain't neccessarily canon). That's why I never got into any of the expanded universe stuff. Even if it's done well, it always reeks to me of knock-off junk or a What If? comic. Neat, but not needed or really intergrated in a believable way. As much crap as I give Lucas, I've always loved and admired his stance that ANY expanded universe stuff that Lucasfilm OKs may or may not be true. That way, fans who want a billion stories linking every freaking character are happy and he can just sh*tcan anything he thinks is stupid or goes against his movies. It relegates the Expaded Universe stuff to basically glorified fan fiction.

It was all the damn books and video games that decided every single freakin' mask or costume that got more than 2 seconds of screen time in any scene in the original trilogy was an integral part of the rebellion or a jedi or a cousin to Han Solo or Chewbacca's nephew's accountant. It was this crap that made Lucas decide to make all Stormtroopers clones of Jango Fett. In such a vast and diverse universe, isn't it odd that every single creature in the cantina on that day or bounty hunter on that bridge was involved in every major event in the downfall of the empire? Wowzers!

This show seems to be treading that fine line. It takes place in a defined time period and will involve actual story arcs, but "all new characters"? If they're all new, where are they in the canon come Ep.4-6? "All new characters" to me is McCallum speak for "If you fans think it's stupid, just ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist". It's a great way for Lucasfilm to have their cake and eat it too.

Why not just do
