Date: Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Tim Hildebrandt, an influential part of STAR WARS, passed away on June 11 due to complications from diabetes. Our thoughts go out to his brother Greg and everyone in the Hildebrandt family.

Greg and Tim Hildebrandt are internationally known illustrators. They are best known for painting Fantasy art and Sci-Fi art. They have painted the 1977,'78,'79 JRR Tolkien Lord of the Rings Calendars, as well as the original Star Wars movie posters. They worked in many other fields as well including Comic Books, doing various trading card sets and comic covers. The still work doing book covers, commercial art, advertising art and private commissions.

His Star Wars art was on my walls for years! I especially loved the preproduction artwork he did. Really striking and original. Thanks Tim.

I had their LotR calendars. After the year was over, I'd break up the calendar just so I could hang up the individual pictures on my walls. Like Tolkien's writings, their paintings had a way of drawing in the viewer and making them believe they had entered a fantastic yet completely real world.

RIP, Tim. Your works will always be a great joy to behold, and your talent an inspiration to many aspiring artists.

Wow---his classic Star Wars movie poster was my favorite iron-on decal and poster in 7th grade in 1977 and his artwork really brought my imagination far and beyond the 70's pastiche back then. Everytime I see the classic Luke holding lightsaber in the air with a leggy Leia holding her pistol poster it brings me back to the very first night I saw SW (pre "New Hope" title) on opening day in May '77. RIP and thanks for influencing me in many ways.

I have a framed, amazing Captain America poster the brothers painted that adorns my den wall. Wonderful artist who left a great legacy for everyone to see and enjoy.

I have a Dragonriders of Pern claendar that they did and it really captured the essence of the stories. His passing will not be forgotten. Your art will live forever. Thank you.

I had the privilege of meeting him at DragonCon several years ago at a signing. When my kids are old enough, hope to show them his work alongside these wonderful stories he helped bring to vivid life. He will be missed. RIP sir.
