STARGATE ATLANTIS Movie Greenlit by Sci-Fi

Building upon the successful "Stargate" franchise, SCI FI Channel today announced it has greenlit a two-hour movie based on the hit science fiction adventure series "Stargate Atlantis." SCI FI will have the exclusive worldwide television premiere of the yet to be titled "Stargate Atlantis" film, which will then be released on DVD by MGM. The movie will be written by "Stargate Atlantis'" executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, who also serve as series showrunners. The movie is set to follow the fifth and final season of "Stargate Atlantis," as it draws to its thrilling conclusion in January 2009.

"We're excited to tell 'Atlantis' stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original 'Stargate' DTV movies 'The Ark of Truth' and 'Continuum' have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both 'SG-1' and 'Atlantis' to remain vital as we expand the franchise," said Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, co-creators of "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" and who both currently serve as executive producers on "Atlantis."

"We share in the producers' enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on 'Stargate Atlantis' in this new format," said Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President Programming & Original Movies.

"Stargate Atlantis" follows the adventures of an intrepid team of military and civilian explorers who travel the distant Pegasus galaxy by means of a Stargate, a portal created long ago by a highly advanced alien civilization called the Ancients. In their never-ending quest to seek out other technologies left behind by the Ancients, the Atlantis team encounters alien cultures some friend, some foe.

The series will reach a milestone with the 100th episode airing in January 2009. "Atlantis" is executive produced by Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie, Carl Binder, and Martin Gero. Mallozzi and Mullie share the reins as showrunners.

Whoa WAIT! Fifth and FINAL Season? I was on vacation too long? When did that FINAL SEASON thing get announced? This is... that's... Horrible. And to think I actually got my brother to start watching Stargate based on Joe Flannigan's performance. I guess it's better to go out on top huh? Okay, no more ranting. Good job Atlantis. It's been fun, let's finish strong!

Final season! WTF? No wonder Amanda jumped off the ship. So no more tv series for them? No BSG and Stargate? Sci-fi is going to have to pack up.

DVD movies have not sucked anyway for Stargate.

This is complete bullshit.... Once again, Sci-Fi is cancelling another show which has a fan base, and puts out great programming. What they need to do is stop making those crapass B movies and plug their efforts into keeping shows like this around. Thanks for Flash Gordon btw... that money could have been used on season 6, what a piece of shit that was.

Amanda Tapping left because her web-series Sanctuary got picked up by Sci-Fi and she will be putting all her time (save the SG-1 movies) into that.

I read that stargate is coming out with a new series called stargate universe which is to star a group of younger people. I am thinking Dawsons Creek in space RIP Atlantis, SG-1 those were 2 of the few shows both me and my wife both liked

Final Season!?! This cuts me deeper than I imagined. I always thought of Atlantis as the red-headed stepchild of SG-1 but I'd really come to enjoy it and almost rely on it. A life without new Stargate episodes? One or both have been on for over 10 years! Other than Dr. Who or BSG the Sci-Fi channel usually isn't worth watching.

Both SG-1 movies are great and I'm real happy they are big successes. I just love that they actually went to the Artic and on a nuclear sub in Continuum. What a great opportunity. I'll be looking forward to more SG-1 and Atlantis in movie form.

I am totally shocked by this news too.... end of Stargate:Atlantis after this season!?! When did this happen, who is making these decisions at Scf-Fi channel, and are they just trying to have no one watch this channel anymore for new and original shows??? Is Sci-Fi just going to become a rerun channel because if that is going t be true let me know now goddamitt!!! Totally ruined my day today.....when is the countdown to the final episode going to start so I can start crying "KHAN......KHAN!!"

BRING BACK JOURNEYMAN, IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS IN A LONG TIME. WAKE UP AND PUT THE GOOD STUFF BACK ON THE TUBE. ATLANTIS WAS COOL, BUT IT LOST ITS GRIP ON WHAT THE SHOW WAS ABOUT. THEY NEEDED TO MEET NEW MORE ADVANCED RACES AND LEARN COOL STUFF ABOUT THE PAST THAT NEVER HAPPENED LIKE IN SG-1. ATLANTIS CHOKED ITSELF ON WRAITH, THE CITY, AND NO ZPM'S.
THEY NEEDED NEW RAW MATERIAL AND THAT NEVER SURFACED. MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE FOUND ANOTHER CRYSTAL SKULL IN PEGASUS, OR PERHAPS FOUND ANOTHER MEETING PLACE OF THE FOUR RACES, OR PERHAPS WE COULD HAVE SEEN THE DISSOLUTION OF THE FOUR RACES BY STORY TELLING FROM THE ANCIENTS RECORDS, ANY HOW. THEY HAD THERE SHOT THEY BLEW IT. NOT THE ACTORS FAULT THATS FOR SURE.....

Bottom line is Sci-Fi has a bunch of Chimps working at the top. They have no freaking idea what they are doing. They just sit around eating bananas and playing with their shit. Its the only explanation I can come up as to why they spend money making stupendously bad movies only to cancel their quality shows due to "financial" reasons. Its not due to rating or lack of fans. Farscape was the first victim, then Stargate, now, Stargate Atlantis. Don't even get me started on BSG. If half the networks we watched conducted business like this we'd have nothing to watch! Fuck you Sci-fi Channel, Fuck you.. in the ass!

I agree with your statements Pony.... This is has just pissed me completely off, as I could not wait for tonight's episode. Just when Robert Picardo came on to make the show even better... BAM - GONE! Fuckers....

Sci-Fi has picked up the new show Stargate Universe and from the below article looks as if Atlantis goes off with a cliffhanger which the movie will resolve. Then there will be another movie to introduce the new series which in turn, gets picked up for next summer.
