Updates:

July 21, 2006 - Dean Devlin, the co-writer and producer of the original STARGATE, has a production deal with MGM to develop a sequel that will pick up the story from the 1994 film.

Devlin spoke to Sci Fi Wire, saying, "We would just continue the mythology of the movie and finish that out. I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel. So we're going to try to not tread on their stories."

"When we created the original Stargate, we always envisioned it as a trilogy, and, unfortunately, the way in which the movie got made, we didn't really have control over [it]," Devlin added. "I think it will be very exciting to actually get to go do parts two and three."

Roland Emmerich will have the opportunity to direct the film if he wants, and Devlin said both Russell and Spader seem interested in coming back. [Sci Fi Wire]

May 12, 2006 - Will we be seeing more Stargate? Brad Wright, co-executive producer of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis sure thinks so. Mentioned as possible upcoming projects were a third TV series, a movie, and a massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"What we've built is now bigger than all of us," Wright said. "Even if I were to not do the movie, I know somebody is going to do a Stargate movie. It's the second largest franchise for MGM next to Bond. So it's got significant brand potential, and by two series doing as well as they are and a game coming out, that could really, really, really brand the show in a big way. That's what they like in this business: a larger franchise with so many legs to it that it could go into the future for years to come."

"I know there will be a movie made," Wright said. "I know there will likely be another series made, whether I make it or not. It's just too good a vehicle for storytelling. This is exactly what Jonathan [Glassner] and I recognized 10 years ago, when we created the series. The Stargate is dramatically, and in terms of storytelling, a perfect vehicle from which to launch characters and tell stories. That's why it will go for years to come."

WTF? ""We would just continue the mythology of the movie and finish that out.." finish it from where? after the Odyssey got all decked out by the Asgard? Or are they actually foolish enough to try & squeeze something in between the film & the first series? Either way, I smell failure on the horizon.

I don't agree to that, as for a new film for Star Gate I would be interested in it.
there's several things that troubles me though, could this be another Star Trek like burning it out as time goes by. One of the things why SG being what it is now is that nothing has really challenged the series at all. Trek has been off the air and it has a strong fan base, if it came back to tv and they stopped making the films all togehter. SG will lose their fan base faster than anything.
There isn't an end insight for Star Gate nor Trek for that matter. Reimaging Trek is one thing but getting a new film out would have been better with a different crew, not go back to the roots of Spock and Kirk.
What's so wrong in going into further into the future. But for SG fans and the tv series, and the actually film are two separated universes, it's just that they want to continue the story line in the films as well to continue the tv universe.
In either case, I simply don't really care as long they have great stories to tell. Let them finish off the film trilogy with the old group, so that way they can make their own version of Atlantis as well. As long the stories don't go stale, keep up the good work. PLus it's all about money.
