Yes, the article is titled Movie/DVD News. The truth is that this major announcement hit a lot of us off-guard and was vague to say the least from Sony and Variety. Apparently, Sony has established a new production label called Stage 6 Films and we will not know whether some of these future titles are going to be theatrical releases or straight-to-dvd releases. Either way, they plan to have produce 10-15 films per year. Some of these titles will obviously be straight-to-dvd releases, probably the STARSHIP TROOPERS sequel starring Casper Van Dien, whereas others are not so obvious and may become theatrical releases..

Here's the article as written by Tatiana Siegel at Variety...

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has launched Stage 6 Films, a label that will acquire and produce films for theatrical and straight-to-DVD release.
Stage 6 will complement the acquisitions group's busy pipeline of more than 100 films and original projects per year.

Adrian Alperovich, senior exec VP and general manager of the acquisitions group, said Stage 6's slate will mostly be geared toward ancillary markets. But the label, which will handle 10-15 films per year, will also release some of the titles theatrically through Sony's distribution labels and other companies like the Samuel Goldwyn Co. Like Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, Stage 6 will determine whether a title bows theatrically after the film has been made.

Titles on Stage 6's initial slate include the actioner "Conspiracy," starring Val Kilmer, Gary Cole and Jennifer Esposito; the Thomas Jane acting-directing vehicle "Dark Country"; "The Stone House," a horror/thriller directed by Alex Turner and starring Shane West, J.K. Simmons and Leonard Roberts; "The Lodger," starring Alfred Molina and directed by David Ondaatje; and the thriller "Felon," which stars Kilmer, Stephen Dorff and Harold Perrineau. The label's films will largely fall in the $1 million-$10 million budget range.

The label is also shepherding a "Starship Troopers" sequel starring Casper Van Dien, Boris Kodjoe and Jolene Blalock; a "Vacancy" prequel; the Wesley Snipes starrer "Art of War 2"; and "Center Stage 2," a sequel to the dance drama.

"Stage 6 will also continue to leverage our vast library of studio films as we have done with 'Daddy Day Camp' and the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' franchise," Alperovich added.

Screen Gems veeps of production Peter Nelson and Nick Phillips will oversee Stage 6 titles alongside Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group senior veep of acquisitions and production Lara Thompson and exec director of acquisitions and production Scott Shooman.

You can't even make a TV show episode anymore for only a million.

What is Wesley going to film AoW2 from prison?
I can see the Snipes movie now, "Art of War 2".
Snipes has to defend himself from Rapists while serving 15 years for Tax evasion. If the movie does well he might get the chance to cameo in Starship Poopers.

The whole issue of funding was the excuse that was given to the reason the first Starship Troopers did not come closer to Heinlein's vision in the first place. Verhoven claimed with his budget he could either have really realistic aliens or the troopers armor from the books and he chose the aliens. Now we are talking less money?? Not to mention the Aaron Spelling School of acting gang in the orginal movie. I smell a direct to DVD directly to the latrine contract here.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a great movie.

As for Starship Troopers, I'd prefer they rename the first movie Paul Verhoeven's Bug Hunt and then actually make a Starship Troppers movie that has something to do with the book itself.

I had never heard that tidbit about the budget affecting Verhoeven's adaptation, indigosan, so thanks for that info. That certainly would explain leaving out the armor, which is really awesome, but to me it's pretty clear his movie was going to have very little to do with the book regardless of budget.

mckracken • Oct 10, 2007, 01:04am •
yeah starshit troopers III
they should do every other film sequel in roman numerals just for tricks and giggles.
Starshit troopers 2 wasnt bad considering Phil tippett made it for $9,000,000!

hey its not putting anyone out if it gets released to DVD is it? if word of mouth is that its semi decent then I'd say it was worth it to make another Starshit troopers movie... with jolene Blalock too! (casper van dien is shit ass desperate for a job and we all know it.)

also Val Kilmer's career has been in the garbage for awhile. I was totally shocked a few years ago when I seen his small role in "The Missing" with Tommy Lee Jones. He was all bearded and thicker set than I was used to seeing
