It seems that Sony Pictures is also running the Avengers playbook, only this time they are focusing on villains instead of heroes. It looks like things just got a whole lot tougher for old web head.

“Sony has announced plans for new movies about Spider-Man’s nemesis Venom and the collective of bad guys known as the Sinister Six via its Electro Arrives website. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon will write the screenplay for “Venom,” while Drew Goddard will write, and potentially direct, “The Sinister Six,” focusing on the the villains in the franchise.

Additionally, Kurtzman, Orci and Jeff Pinkner will write the script for “The Amazing Spider-Man 3,” which is set to arrive in theaters June 10, 2016”.

It’s great that Sony is expanding the Spider-man cinematic universe with spin-off films. However, a movie wrapped around villains? I’m a fan of Drew Goddard (bring on his Daredevil Netflix series!), but it will take a lot to bring the Sinister Six to life. I hate making the comparison, but they are no Legion of Doom.

Every fan who has ever worn a Venom t-shirt and prayed for a Venom movie has finally gotten their wish. As a fan Spider-Man, I don’t see a Venom movie as a good thing. He’s a supporting character, a great villain, but every time they try and turn him into more of hero, dark or otherwise, it never really works. I haven’t read the Flash Thompson comic, so would this be a good route to go? Sound off below Maniacs!

Agreed, stories from the villains point of view is good in the comics, not so much on the big screen.

I have mixed feelings and some concerns but I'd definitely make the trip to the theater to see these films.

I think some villain origin stories have the possibility of having us feel some empathy for them.

I think Kraven, Black Cat and Morbius if Sony has the rights could all make for something reallyt good.

Yuck.

Venom yeh, sinister 6 mmmmm. not sure how that would work. Can it, has anyone seen anything where this type of jazz works?

SONY Pictures handling of the entire Spiderman series has been a bad idea.

Movies featuring criminals in the lead roles have been successful for ages.  Usually they're made sympathetic because the actors are attractive and charismatic, such as The Godfather, Ocean's Eleven or Pulp Fiction.  In the case of the Sinister Six, I'd expect Sony to instead go the route of The Dirty Dozen.  Spider-Man's foes are all facing life in prison, and a government agent offers them a chance at freedom some day in exchange for undertaking dangerous missions.  DC/WB is working on Suicide Squad, after all.

Can't really be any worse than Spiderman 3, can it?

Muenster 12/14/2013 2:32:10 PM

That's a very good question Darth.

The problem with expanding the Spiderman franchise with spinoff's is that there's not much there to work with. And there's no "grey area" crossover characters that could be used by both companies. Like the deal with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
