Stephen Chow as Kato in HORNET

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor
Date: Saturday, July 21, 2007
Source: The La Times

It seems that the LA Times has some good sources close inside the Seth Rogen/Sony camps. First, they revealed that Rogen first pitched the story idea of the GREEN HORNET to Sony. Yesterday, they broke the story that Rogen would indeed write and star in the comic adaptation. Today, they're breaking another related item. It seems that newly tapped writer/actor Rogen wants Stephen Chow (KUNG FU HUSTLE) to play Kato, his martial arts enabled and masked sidekick.

I still think Jason Scott Lee would have been the best choice although Stephen Chow would have been my second choice...Right on...

Rogen, no. Chow, yes.

Is this a comedy?

Um, the two leads lend the answer to "is this a comedy" as "yes." Very unfortunate. This could have been a much more interesting film. I'd have gone dark...ala Batman Begins. Instead, we get a send up. Or, worse case, they try it straight face. This guy should stick to the genre that works best for fat, dumb, dope smoking characters. I'll pass.

Cappy, I'm not saying that Rogen is in the same ballpark as this next example, just saying...I remember people said the same sort of things about Jim Carrey when he made the movie to break the drama barrier. Personally, I think he should have at least been nominated for an Oscar, but "Man on the Moon" was classified as a comedy. Also, what about Danny DeVito...at one time only known as the squirrely guy from "Taxi"...now he's not only an accomplished dramatic actor, but a director and producer as well.

This Green Hornet film may very well turn out to be some sort of spoof, but considering that nobody has even released a single plot detail or any hint as to the mood or feel of the movie, why not just wait and see? If they make a spoof, then never mind everything I've just said...lol.

With Rogen intending to produce, write, and star in it, I'd say it's going to be a comedy. He's never written or produced anything that isn't a comedy.

Given this bit of casting information, I'm really thinking that this will be the bumbling-superhero-wannabe-whose-ass-is-always-rescued-by-his-sidekick type of movie. Kinda like Rush Hour in green costumes and masks. If so, I'm not looking forward to it.

good casting for Kato. My queston is this: Will the movie be set in the 60's or in our present day?

If this is a straight...serious version of the story, maybe I'll go for it...but if this is a comedy...none of these people will get my money...not one cent!!!

Stephen Chow is awesome. I was wary about the Seth Rogen news, but now I'm totally on board. WHEE!

Green Hornet generates 0 interest from most people. This won't be a big budget film unless Sony is insane and wants to have a flop interms of $$. Neither Rogen or Chow are big names here, not like say Clooney or Li, to generate interest just on name alone. They gotta keep it a manageable budget and make it a comedy and this film will probably generate some cash for them. I think a comedy will work nicely with this character, like someone said in another post, sort of a pink panther type thing might work. We'll see what pops up with the details in the future.
