Stephen Sommers Back on G.I JOE

It's official and confirmed, readers. Director Stephen Sommers is back on for the live action adaptation of G.I. JOE, says Robert at IESB and Variety. He was first announced earlier this month as being the director and then a week later, there were whispers about Paramount rejecting the "salary price" that director Sommers wanted for the gig. Apparently, that's been worked out between the parties because the studio has now confirmed he will be the director in another team production between Paramount & Hasbro (same team to adapt TRANSFORMERS). Variety is saying that Sommers pitched his version of the film to the studio executives on Wednesday night and was hired on the spot after they were satisfied with what they heard.

"Our vision (for 'The Mummy') was clear the time the first trailer played during the Super Bowl, and by the time this one plays a Super Bowl, you'll see the coolest characters and visuals you can imagine, and beyond-state-of-the-art equipment," Sommers said. "I wouldn't have jumped into this just because of the Hasbro-Transformers tie. Remember, 'Pirates of the Caribbean was a big hit, but 'Haunted Mansion' not so much."

"My experience with beloved properties is that characters, attitude and tone are even more important than plot," di Bonaventura said. "Paramount showed a great deal of confidence in Stephen's take, and our ability as producers to get this up and running for a February start. His passion for the characters and the world convinced the studio this was something they couldn't resist."

Production on G.I. JOE begins in February 2008 with a theatrical release planned for summer 2009.

What to think? I really liked the 1st Mummy. Mummy 2, not so much and to say I was let down with Van Helsing would be a gross understatement. Hopefully Sommers realizes that casting this film is just as important as the script. GI Joe was a huge part of my childhood, much like Transformers. My screen name is Flint for that reason. Whatever happens I DO NOT want to see Marky Mark as Duke, as was rumored last week. I will say I like Daniel Craig for Duke and I think Hugh Jackman would make for an excellent Flint.

YO JOE!

Who cares???!!! This movie will bomb!!!

Somebody ought to do a ROM movie, or a Micronauts film instead!!!

Somebody has got to get it.... These movies are based on toy lines and the 30 minute cartoon shows around them... they are going to be campy, they are going to be ridiculous, they are going to be silly, but sometimes, they just might be fun too... as in Transformers IMHO....
We're all grown up boys and girls... some of the shit we loved as kids, we just can't hold on to...
GI Joe will be all of the above and hopefully fun as well...
I mean come on... it's about a bunch of Soldiers who never get killed going after a guy with a terrible lisp and his buddy, who looks like a Silver Oscar...
If you want deep...go elsewhere

Madmanic999, It's worse than that really....OUR beloved G.I Joe was actually a..... wait for it.... "Re-imagined" version of the original 12 inch doll (Actoin Figure) as it is. Alls fair on this one I'm afraid....sigh....

I agree with Madmanic, but come on…

we can all hear the sweet sound of this movie sucking cause of Sommers being involved.

By we all, I hope you mean your multilpe personalitys Myklspader, bucause I for one think this movie will kick ass, Stephen Sommers is a more than capable director. The Jungle Book, Deep Rising, The Mummies and Van Helsing. I admit Van Helsing was a bit of a mis-step, fun movie but way over the top. I am sure we will make a totally kick ass movie.

dammit. I thought this hack was gone away from this film, and now Paramount goes and resurrects him.

I am not a fan of this guy's work. Deep Rising is a fun cable watch, but The Mummy movies were subpar, and that Van Helsing movie was just plain garbage, IMO.

Sommers is going to fill this with a lot of his lame humor, and, argh... nevermind

I say that if G.I. Joe (with Van Damme as Conrad S. Hauser, aka "Duke") is successful, DIC Enterprises steps it up and puts out their long overdue "M.A.S.K." movie. Soldiers driving transforming vehicles is just the next logical step in this cinema evolution.

Now Knowing Sommers made the Junglebook and Deep Rising along with Van Helsing proves the Special Effects are going to be horridble!Thats what I'm worried about. Far as the story it should be easy, and get a descent cast. But please don't have action man. You can keep Jason Straihan(i don't how to spell his name) but as a different character (Zartan).
