Michael Dayspring over at IESB has announced that Paramount and partner Hasbro has tapped director Stephen Sommers (Mummy, Mummy 2) to helm the adaptation of G.I. JOE to the big screen. After the success of their last partnership, TRANSFORMERS, it's easy to see them getting this prepped and ready to go sooner than previously expected.

G.I JOE is based off the toy line (that has existed since 1964) but more commonly known by fans from the 1985 animated series.

Plot Summary: G.I. Joe is a highly trained branch (made up of characters Duke, Flint, Gung Ho, Roadblock, Scarlett, Snake Eyes)  of America's military whose purpose is to defend the world against enemy attack. Their main adversary is the COBRA Organization (made up of characters Cobra Commander, Baroness, Destro & their minions, Cobra Officers/Troopers) , a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world.

The explosions will be numerous - the death toll will be zero.

"Used to be a man!!!!!!!"

Steven Summers??

(SIGH)

Flush that one down the toilet, why don't you? And a GIJoe film had so much potential, too.

NO!!!!

Sommers? C'mon, man. Am I the only person who was duped into watching Van Helsing and having my brain leak out in the process? This man will ruin GI Joe.

Most people who grew up with this shit are in their late 20's/early 30's, but as fucking usual they will make it PG-13 or some shit to please the kids or whatever.......I swear to god, unless it's rated R most movies like this don't stand a chance at being decent.......it's supposed to be about military and war and terrorists!!!! You try to tell me you could spend 15 seconds in that world without making best friends with the word FUCK! Not to mention the gory graphic violence that takes place with terrorism and thier elimination. Sommers has potential because he likes fun and excitement but he's gotta get mean and dirty. He needs some advice from Zack Snyder.

Re #7......wish, much as I agree that this is likely to be a steaming pile in the hands of Sommers (now there's an image...), this is a movie based on a cartoon and a range of toys, so it never did have anything to do with the real world of military war and terrorists, did it? Why should the movie be any different in that respect?
Thanks, but no thanks. I'll pass on this one.

The thing is, this movie of all the other 80's toons has the most potential to be something worthwhile. It is extremely relevant (or could be) and is the most realistic of any of the cartoon properties. They're real people fighting other real people. No robots in disguise, or giant bipedal cats, or robot lions. I don't have high expectations for this film, but it could be a good military action flick that is somewhat relevant if they tried.
