Steve Niles on 30 Days of Night Film
By: Damon A. SchmidtDate: Monday, October 21, 2002
Steve Niles recently sat down with The Pulse to discuss, amongst other things, the film adaptation of his best selling30 Days of Night.
Niles is writing the screen play for the project which some may recall was optioned bySam Raimi (Spider-Man) a scant two months ago. So what is it like working with Raimi?
"I'm having the time of my life (I'm working with the guy who made the Evil Dead movies for god's sake!) Raimi is a dream to work with. He's completely dedicated to the material and his only interest is getting the right story down. Plus, he's funny as hell. I never knew that about him. He keeps me laughing in all the meetings," Niles said
Fans may well wonder how the books' transition to the big screen might change things. Will the story be the same? Are the characters going to be recognizable as the same characters from the runawayseries published by IDW? How many surprises have come up during the conversion process?
Niles had this to say about the questions plaguing fans. "Too many (surprises) to list, but it's a good thing! I like changing my work, improving it and seeing where one thing can lead to another. The main story has remained completely true to the original idea. It's a simple idea and I think it works best that way. The most surprises have come while fleshing out the characters. They've become a lot more complex than (we had time for) in the comic. Mostly I feel this amazing sense of breathing space and elbow room."
