Comic author Steve Niles talked at the Festival of Fear event about the on-going process of adapting his mini-series, CRIMINAL MACABRE, to the big screen. Niles, who has 30 DAYS OF NIGHT hitting the big screen in October and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: BLOOD TRAILS hitting Fearnet.com on September 13, says a director could be attached within the next month for the CM project. He also clued us all into why MGM and another studio couldn't get this project to the big screen. It seems that they wanted to change the lead characters drug habit, something Steve Niles wouldn't allow.

"Instead of the old Philip Marlowe, who's a recovering alcoholic, [Cal] is a recovering junkie. That's all. Recovering," laughs Niles. Still, creative execs didn't jive with that. "It's not like Cheech & Chong, endorsing [drugs]. So, I've had to yank it from the studios who wanted to sanitize it."

Apparently, Niles may also take a shot at directing in the near future for a story titled, REMAINS, which will be an action like flick about zombies in Vegas.

Very good news.

Cal McDonald has that drug habit for a very good reason. Changing that would change one of the main reasons as to why the character works as well as he does. Love to see how they're going to portray Mo'lock when this hits the big screen.

It's great that a comic book author could maintain the clout to control the adaptation of his work.
More power to him, bigboote!

This is cool.I have enjoyed Steve Niles comic books and it is good to see something other then superhero comic book- to movies being done. I do not know about you guys but I am so burnt out on Fantasy films and Superhero films. There has not even been a GOOD one I can think of that has come out in the past couple of years.

I even felt that Spiderman was not that great and I know I am in the majority there.
