You're right Eagle I wish I could.  I fuck his face for the lame prequels, Howard the Duck & Willow.  For making me buy the same three movies over & over & over again.  For making me wait 20 yrs. for a lousy Indy 4.   I could go on but why?

Darkknight2280 12/3/2009 9:18:35 AM

HANSO ur soo full of it on the POP culture thing. STAR WARS is POP CULTURE. I mean its transends soo many different mediums. You dont hear college bands playing the JAWS theme at football games...no you hear the IMPERIAL DEATH MARCH!!! Darth Vader, the force, jedi's, the dark side...and many more things are used and talked about in all differen type of tv shows, movies, news programs and in books. Star Wars IS pop culture...and to dissagree with that is DELUSIONAL and IGNORANT.

monkeyfoot 12/3/2009 9:19:22 AM

Flint, I know there are alot of older SW fans who don't like some of Lucas' other work. But for every fan who speaks of the child molestation the prequels did on them, there are loads of younger kids that see them as just as good as the earlier Star Wars films or even better, since they may have been the first of the series they saw in theatres. I have a co-worker whose kid and his friends drool over every aspect of all the films and devour the Clone Wars TV series.

Darkknight2280 12/3/2009 9:22:07 AM

He didnt make you do anything Flint. Hell im a HUGE star wars fan and i have held out on buying the movies on DVD. Im waiting for the Saga Blu-ray edition. Once I buy that then thats that, all you need is patients my son! :) I will agree the only decent things George has given us are: Star Wars, ILM, THX, and Indiana Jones (50% of it at least). I cant dissagree with the other films u meantion Flint..but i just like to see the glass as half full (and that glass to me is full of Star Wars). You cant be awesome 100% of the time. :)

He hasn't been "awsome" since Last Crusade.

DarkKnight - READING COMPREHENSION baby, look into it. Nowhere in my post did I state Star Wars wasn't influential on pop culture so I really don't understand the point of your post other than to type some words in all caps. I did say Spielberg's pop culture influence was on par or above's Lucas's influence.

redhairs, I wasn't going with greatest director of all time, more like of these two giants, which would best the other, given the parameters outlined. It's no contest who the better director is, or who has more storytelling range. I wrote the thing, and I'm surprised Lucas won, but under these particular guidelines, Lucas beat him.

Dazzler, if I most people were pulling down decent scratch and had a secure job, they's yes the boss too.

Darknight - always wanted to go to one of those. Glad to hear it's worth it.

Hanso - I'm a huge Spielberg fan. JAWS is in my top 5 movies of all time. Empire makes the top 25.

Flint- I will not.

Warcry - I never hear the Chewie in pants one before. I 'd like to see him in some New England style cords though.

Hobbs - I'm happy to let Lucas produce Red Tails. I don't have the same confidence in him as you do.

jedibanner, not sure if Spielberg is number one. I do love Scorcese myself. that's a tough one.

monkeyfoot, agreed.

EagleManiac, glad you agree with the outcome. Again, I'm more surprised than anyone, and I wrote the thing assuming Spielberg would win.

EagleManiac 12/3/2009 10:18:34 AM

Hanso, that's where I would have to kindly disagree with you. Lucas' Star Wars ALONE has more influence on American Pop Culture than all of Spielberg's films combined. Darth Vader has been called the most evil character to grace the movie screen more often than anything Steven has created. Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knights, and Lightsabers have been used as symbols of good and honesty more than any character, group or object Steven has even used in his films. Yoda's quotes are used as "inspirational remarks" far more than any character Steven has ever done. Really, when it comes to Pop Culture, Star Wars is one of the most influential stories compared to anything Steven has done.

Sure, Steven gave us a man eating shark and the phrase, "It's not safe to go into the water!", and E.T. and his phrase "E.T. phone home!", and even the greeting music for the aliens in Close Encounters(thank you John Williams), but even those PALE in comparison to what Star Wars has done.

And speaking of music, how many Spielberg movies can you name that has music that is used as often as the music in Star Wars at sporting events, concerts, WEDDINGS!, partys, and so on? I don't think there are any. When you mention John Williams to someone, first music of his that comes to mind is Star Wars. At ComicCon events, there are more Star Wars characters that people dress up as than any other franchise or movie, even Star Trek!

And no other phrase from any other movie or TV or comic book series has been uttered more than, "May The Force Be With You!" or in the case of Spaceballs, "May The Schwartz Be With You!" LOL!!!

hanso, excellent point on Spielberg doing Scorcese, but not the other way around.

wiseguy, Cameron isn't in the top two as long as Marty S. is still kicking. And with Hitchcock's body of work, he may never crack the top three.

EagleManiac, Lucas' changes over how movies are now made is what gives him the edge after all is said and done.

thorin02, exactly.

hanso (again) I agree the difference isn't so wide, but Star Wars fans are rabid. Can't say the same of JAWS fans or Animaniac fans. And as I said, I prefer JAWS to SW.

jedibanner, you said what I said, before I said it.

dakomoon - egos, probably, but warranted.

monkeyfoot, again, these are the reasons George gets the nod. Nicely put.

JoeArtistWriter 12/3/2009 10:33:25 AM

Flint, ya gotta move on pal. It'll be ok.

monkeyfoot, I'm one of the older guys who disliked 2 of the 3 prequels, but still saw them, and even bought the first DVD (even though I hated it) You're right though. Kids love it, and Clone Wars is actually very good.

Darkknight, way to hold out.

hanso, you go, bro!

Eaglemaniac, you had to quote Spaceballs? Man I hate that movie. Terrible. Mel Brooks lost it somewhere in the first half of History of the World, and never got funny again. He was great though.
