Based on appearance during C.Claremont and John Byrne's Uncanny X-Men run??????? I don't ever remember John Byrne depicting Storm (aka Ororo) like this....EVER!! Not even in 'The Art of John Byrne' book I once had!!!

Never liked the mohawk.

#1, I believe you are correct. It was in Paul Smith's run of Uncanny where Storm went punk - somewhere around Uncanny 175, I think. The punk look carried over into the regrettable John Romita Jr. and Dan Green run of Uncanny.

almostunbiased, I never liked the mohawk either, and I didn't like her character much during that timeframe in the X-Men books.

Yes, the mohawk was not only a terrible look, it was a very unconvincing story line/character development. It was even worse when Storm lost her powere and still "bested" Cyclops for control of the X-Men (#201, first Rick Leonardi fill in, I think). The lame-ass argument Claremont made was that Cyclops was "distracted" and his heart wasn't in it because of the whole Madelyne Prior/Jean Grey thing and suddenly a powerless Storm was a street fighting ninja because, y'know, she was a pickpocket in Cairo as a kid, so she has mad skills. Lame. It's as if Claremont forgot that he himself had Cyclops kick Wolverine's, Nightcrawler's AND Storm's collective asses back during the Proteus saga using mostly hand to hand combat to shake those 3 out of the bstupid Storm/Cyclops leadership battle was the begining of Claremont and all of Marvel basically marginalizing Cyclops as a leader or even a valid character. They suck for that.

Oh, and Byrne did draw that stupid Storm look once, I think. In the mid 80's he did a guest "editoring" of Bullpen Bulletins where he just did a pinup of him at his drawing table surrounded by all the major Marvel characters. He put the FF and his beloved Alpha Flight Marvel was currently pimping front and center and the X-Men had their backs to the "camera", and the current version of Storm was I believe that retarded "punk rock" one.

OK I was on a rant there and deleted a block of type .... I was saying Cyke used mostly "hand to hand to shake those 3 out of their battle-scarred funk. That stupid Storm/Cyclops "leadership battle" was the beginning ......"

Anyway, name one person who liked the "punk" Storm, either the look or the character as she was written. You can't. Y'know why? Because it sucked moose nuts. That is why I'll spit up my Frankenberry if anyone actually buys this. The reasons for her transformation were unconvincing and totally pulled out of left field/Claremont's ass as a weak way to make "daring and dramatic" changes to a character that was fine to begin with. It literally happened in one issue. It was like when Pantera went from a poofy hair glam-pop band to a bunch of Joe Hardcores in the span of 1 week. And about as convincing.

#5 - I agree totally. i was going to add that in my first post, but you beat me to it. When they "retooled" Storm's character that way, she lost the African princess aspect that I enjoyed. She went from being somewhat regal and maybe a little aloof to this hardcore streetfighter. And, I hated the battle she had with Cyclops for leadership. It was so out of character for Cyclops and just a poor plot device.

I loved the mohawk look. So much better than that those thigh-high boots with the holes in them and that weird circular cape. I would like to see her go back to an extreme look like this again. Change is good (well, it can be good).

I didn't mind the mohawk look either. It was certainly visually distinctive for its time. I am glad they moved away from it though as it really looks dated now.

I didn't mind the mohawk. I just thought it was odd that she went from regal former goddess to punk streetfighter overnight.
