Cool Stuff Everyone Should Try, part 1

(Tue 01/30/2007 06:53pm)

Ok, so I am among the least cool people I know, but I love all sorts of stuff;  if you've somehow stumbled upon this blog, maybe you will find something new to try out also.  Without further ado:

1. Leonard Cohen's music:  I first heard Cohen's songs from that old Christian Slater movie, Pump Up the Volume.  I have come to love almost all of his songs.  He is the best lyricist that I know of (and I don't know that much about music at all).  Most people will have heard of his song Hallelujah as it was used in Shrek, sung by someone else.  Check out his songs, Closing Time, I'm Your Man, Waiting for the Miracle, If it be Your Will, aw heck download all you can of his songs.  He can be dark, funny, deep, sad; his music has a wonderful range of themes and feelings.

2. "Popcorn Chicken" from Quickly,  QCup, or Tapioca Express:  If you have access to any of these Asian pearl tea restraunts, make sure to order their chicken.  They are smaller and way tastier than chicken nuggets; KFC makes an ok Anglocized version with their popcorn chicken, but the "popcorn chicken" (cannot think of better term for it since the only common name for what these restraunts serve is a Chinese name) from these Asian places are just amazing.  Yup, I just gave away my race didn't I?

3. Fire and Ice, that animated fantasy movie based on Frank Frazetta's artwork.  The story and artwork was quite solid for a non-Disney American animation.  The animation was more consistent in quality than Heavy Metal the movie, pretty much the only other more adult style American animated movie.  In fact, there is so much focus on the torso of the rediculously proportioned female lead, you will likley feel a bit dirty after watching it.  Nonetheless, there was some nice action and the characters were interesting.

4. Magic Carpet, the PC game may not be playable anymore since when I last tried to play it about a decade ago my PC was already running it at such a high speed that it was unplayable.  Hopefully someone created a patch or a hack because this was among the most addictive and enjoyable games I ever played and those who have not played it before NEED to.  Frenetic action with some strategic elements; I still remember tossing meteorites that I could see deform and devestate the enemy landscape.  Creating a volcano in the middle of their castle was also incredibly cool.

(To be continued, eventually)
