Straczynski Talks SILVER SURFER

While the spin-off for Silver Surfer is technically spinning off in development hell space, Maniac Joeybaloney has passed along an AMC interview with screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski on what his script focused on for the Marvel superhero.

"Whether or not it ever gets made I don't know because they were kind of disappointed in how 'Fantastic Four 2' did," Straczynski said. "And given how this will be a subset of FF2 in terms of the marketing strategy, I think there is hesitation there about putting it forward. The script is pretty good, I like it, but whether or not it goes into production, I have no idea."

He added that the movie was to "pick up literally the next frame after the FF2 movie, where you find out why Silver Surfer was there and what happened to him. We would have seen Galactus, his home world, what happened and him trying to get back there, because now that he's betrayed Galactus, he's concerned his home world might be in jeopardy."

Asked to explain how we would see Galactus, he said, "In the script I come up with some ways to visualize him that are true to the original, but take it one step further using the current CGI technology that we have. So we would have seen him as a character on numerous occasions in the second movie, not inconsistent with the first distant shot of him in that that's just a way of concealing who and what he really is. Believe me, he would be not at all silly looking."

Thank you Joey, I had just asked about this last week on the Hulk review too. Don't know if that's what caused you to look around for this, or if it was just happenstance; thanks either way. I hope it gets made, would be a shame if it was canned due to the crappy Fantastic Four.

Those that mean Galactus would still be a cloud for most of the film? Don't want to see that.
By the way, EW says Crashdown from BSG is the new Doomsday in Smallville. Says, Doomsday is a twenty something bartender.
WTF!!!!!!??

Good job, Joey. Hope it goes.

Hanso, you should know by now that Smallville is in disguise. It is really a show called Sucksville. I don't mind the occasional fresh idea, but those guys have made Clark a whipped almost-but-not-quite superman..

Well, I think we all knew that Doomsday wasn't going to look like he did in the comics. Just the fact that they are even bringing him in before Clark even becomes Superman shows how different their Doomsday will be.

By the way, JMS is the shit. Bab5 rocks!

What really sucks is the shoddy treatment they gave FF:Rise of the Silver Surfer. I thought the first FF film was entertaining and well-done. The second was too short and
too goofy. This was a shock when you consider how well the first one did in terms of
box-office. Now, Tim Story has earned his place in that not-so-elite club: the Destroyers
of Franchises. Other notables include Joel Schumacher and Stuart Baird.

OH NO! IT IS HE, THE DESTROYER OF FRANCHISES! FLEE FOR YOUR VERY LIVES!

Thanks almost. My pleasure ripum. I was wondering about it too but have to admit I had no idea JMS was writing it. Not sure how I missed that. As a huge Bab 5 & Straczynski fan (including his Amazing Spidey run, sans OMD) I just stumbled across it surfin’ at work today. Would LOVE to see this see the light of day. I personally liked both FF movies. I know that’s a minority feeling ‘round these parts. While they definitely had their flaws (Doom) they were good campy fun, like the comics, for me.

But anyway, this could be a huge, non-campy sci-fi EPIC if taken seriously and JMS could certainly steer this in that direction. Maybe FF2 did so poorly Fox will just give it to Marvel Studios? Hmmm? Ah crap. Development Hell here we come.

Anyone catch any footage of SS with Doug Jones doing the voice instead of Fishburne? I actually thought his voice acting was much better suited for the Surfer. Love Fishburne in just about everything else,. Mind ya.

Oh. And hanso, stop watching Smallville. That shit be crap.

PS – my spellchecker wants to change Fishburne to Fishbone. Y’all ain’t got no alibi!

Well ill be damned.

I loved BOTH FF movies. Were they award winners? NO were they awesome superhero romps YES!
The FF comic in my opinion is WEAK! the movies they made from those comics was MUCH better than I anticipated, and I still watch them again and again. Hell I think I like the second one better than the first.

I'm a freak, I also like DD, and Ghostrider
