Strause Bros. Talk About AVP:REQUIEM

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor

Source: Shock Til You Drop

In just five days, when a lot of people will be opening Christmas presents from their loved ones, ALIENS VS. PREDATOR:REQUIEM will be invading theaters. With the marketing aspect of this film reaching its climax, Ryan Rotten had a chance to sit down with the Strause brothers and discuss the film itself. Topics like making the film a hard R (as compared to the last AvP film), adapting musical effects from the original films, adding to the scare and gore factor, etc..

Here's a sample..

ShockTillYouDrop.com: We recognize a lot of sound effects and music cues from the clips you had shown...
Colin Strause:
When we first got on the movie, we told Fox we wanted to digitally remaster all of the original movies. So they actually went to the salt mines and pulled out all of the original negatives and remastered all of the original sound effects for us. We got the Alien squeals straight from the dub stages - that peacock-elephant noise when the Aliens die. Except for Predator vocals, those were the only thing that we did new.

Shock: Would you say this is a tease for another film that will take us to the Predator planet?
Colin:
Yeah. Well, we kind of told them, this is kind of, to us at least, the end of the Earth story. The next one's gotta be in space, you know. We kind of end this one like, we're kind of done here. It'd be nice, the next one, to be before "Alien" but definitely kind of needs to be more of a space epic.

Shock: Could we get to a point where there is a movie that's just monsters?
Greg:
[laughs] That's a hard sell.

Colin: We pitched on the first one and our pitch was like "Dances with Wolves" and we had like forty-five minutes where there was gonna be like no spoken language at all in the movie. Needless to say we didn't get the first movie.

Without even haven't seen this one yet, I'm already down for more. In space, in the future with some unsuspectant earth crew. Yes, hopefully this one'll do well enough at the b.o. to get the next one greenlit.

Hell no. May this glorified direct-to-video die an ingnominious death at the box office.

A movie set in space before Alien? That means people are again contacting the Alien before the first movie. The Predator as well. Remember the line in Aliens where Ripley gets accused of seeing something the likes of which hasn't been seen in countless documented worlds? And that's 150 years after Alien!

Don't be fooled by the Strause brothers statements, either. They really have no control or say where the "next movie" goes. They may well get canned the same way Anderson did. See how they specifically added the disclamer "for us"? That means Fox isn't on board.

AVP-R = POS-BIG TIME. The marketing campaign for this thing can't even sell anything beyond the R. That tells you it's SH**.

No need to buy a ticket, or buy the DVD, folks. If you have to watch it, there are other methods you can use that won't provide so much money back to the turkeys that made this thing. I suggest you use them.

But be warned...people who have already seen it, regret it.

Sniff, sniff...... Does anyone else smell Troll shit? I could give a toss what anyone says, I am seeing this movie. If it sucks, it sucks, but I will reserve judjement until I see it. The trailer makes it looks totally bad-ass and that is all I need......I do hope they make more. Even though the first AVP had many many flaws, it was still a fun movie.

Dude, i don't know why people get work up over stuff like this... To me, the first three alien movies are the ones that matter. The rest of them can be put alongside the crappy predator franchise. And yes, hate to break it to you, but predator one was a fun silly movie, the sequel was just dread, and i can't even remember what happened on avp since i slept through most of it.. I have no intention on watching this "most likely to be shit movie". But Unfortunally, my job requires me to do so.....

Gotta disagree with you on the 1st AVP, Whiskey. It wasn't flawed. It was downright insulting to fans of the original properties.
This movie does look better than the last one. Personally I'm too much of a continuity geek to let the last one pass by without repercussions. No way am I shelling out money for this one. Sloppy storytelling ain't getting rewarded by me.

I think that Aliens was the best that either franchise did in terms of a good movie. Alien was good and scary, but not everybody wants to watch that sort of movie all the time. Aliens was good because it added more of an action-with-story element to it, which is what the AVP movies are going for. Alien 3 was absolute horse sh&* and anybody who disagrees can talk to the wall on my left because that's my opinion and you can't change it.
I'll give this a shot, i enjoyed AVP because i went in expecting the movie to be what it was: a weak-plotted, action-fueled movie. And you know what, when you expect that going in, you don't get disappointed that the story was sub par, so you are able to enjoy what's on the screen for "whats on the screen", not what's missing.

I hope that AVP-R does justice to the original franchises, and as for the R rating being a big advertised thing, i can understand why. Taking horror movies (alien) and dumbing it down so that you can sell it to 13 year olds takes away from the older fans who want to see a good hardcore movie. By advertising that it's restricted they can target the older audiences again because A) no little kiddies there and B) more chance at grotesque violence and maybe even a fun romp/sex scene with a cute piece of eye-candy.

Well i do agree that ALIENS was by far the better movie, the king of the world gave us such a phenomenal, action packed, smart movie that in my opinion, no one has been able to top. But i do disagree completly with you about ALIEN 3. That movie will forever live in the shadows of its predecessor, but to me that doesn't mean it was a horrible movie, i enjoyed the pacing and performances on that movie, and david fincher did his best with what he had on his hands. And come on, give him credit for atleast making alien 3 completely different then the other ones and by injecting a sense of suspense that worked very well, so there, now, if you excuse me, im gonna talk to the wall to your left

joeybaloney • Dec 20, 2007, 02:34pm •
Alien 3 was lost to me in the first few minutes when they killed off Newt & Hicks. Nothing about the rest of the film got me past that horrible decision. EVERTHING Ripley went thru in the previous film became totally pointless. She never got to save/"reunite" with her "daughter". I hate that the guy behind Seven & Fight Club could have been that stupid at one time.

mckracken • Dec 20, 2007, 03:11pm •
Alien³ wasnt Finchers fault... he was a replacment director.
Initially Renny Harlin was attached as director, but left to direct Die Hard 2 (1990). Then Vincent Ward came on board, but only lasted a few months before being fired after several disagreements with the producers. The scriptwriter, Walter Hill, was considered to direct the film as well, but he stepped back after David Fincher became available.
First-time director David Fincher disowned the film, citing constant studio interference and actually walked out of production before editing began.
With the release of the definitive Alien Quadrilogy on DVD in 2004, 20th Century Fox proffered David Fincher the proverbial olive branch and asked him to assemble and comment on his own Director's Cut. Fincher declined. He was the only one of the four Alien directors to refuse to have anything to do with the project.

Thanks mckraken. Still hate Alien 3 but I do feel much better about Fincher!
