Live-Action ASHITA NO JOE

In the Manga-To-Film department a report from Anime Nation (translating from The Daily Cyzo) indicates there's a live action movie based on the manga 'Ashita no Joe' (or 'Tomorrow's Joe' for English markets) in the works. The film is to star Tomohisa Yamashita in the title role as a troubled young man who finds redemption through boxing.

Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba created the classic manga which has been adapted into anime and live-action film many times.

McDuffie Writing New DCU Movies

'Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths' arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray this week. On Thursday of last week, fans in L.A. and New York were treated to a theatrical screening of the film. MTV Splash Page chatted with Dwayne McDuffie, writer of the film, on the red carpet in Los Angeles, where he revealed he's involved in several more DC Universe animated feature films.

"I've written two more [animated] movies," said McDuffie. "I can't say what they are, although I'm dying to say what they are. They're really cool. [Warner Brothers Animation] kind of likes to announce just the next [animated film] to keep focused, but I think people are going to be pretty excited."

Next up, however, is 'Batman: Under the Red Hood', which is written by Judd Winnick, based on his comic book storyline of the same name. So it remains to be seen what McDuffie has up his sleeves, but C2F will be looking forward to those revelations.

Geoff Johns Confirms Mark Strong, GREEN LANTERN Details

While 'Green Lantern' has always been a staple in the DC Comics Universe, the character's strong resurgence in recent years owes much to the writer of Geoff Johns, whose run on the character has culminated with the recent Blackest Night event (which leads into the forthcoming Brightest Day event).

Well, it turns out that Johns has had a busy week, first having been named DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer, and capping things off with a visit to the New Orleans set of 'Green Lantern'. We already know that Martin Campbell is directing the film. Ryan Reynolds is starring in the title role. Other confirmed cast members include Peter Sarsgaard, Blake Lively and Tim Robbins.

And yesterday Johns tweeted some additional details.

"Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans!! Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro," Johns posted yesterday morning, confirming reports from January that Strong was close to signing on as Green Lantern's mentor-turned-nemesis.

Johns had a bit more to share with his followers.

"Kilowog, the Guardians, Oa...all breathtaking. The age of Green Lantern is upon us!!'

Filming on 'Green Lantern' is slated to begin soon!

"The age of Green Lantern is upon us!!"

Sure Geoff.  Sure.  I'll believe it when I see it.  I have my doubts that this live action flick can best First Flight...

littlemikey979 2/22/2010 6:47:15 AM

I have no doubt that Green Lantern is going to be great. DC is on the ball with everything they are doing theses days. And they are doing it on their own, I havn't head anything about a DC/Nickelodeon merger being in the works.

As long as no one from Smallville has anything to do with the GL movie it should be great.

lancedenier 2/22/2010 7:19:02 AM

mikey, the DC (National Comics) merger with Warner Bros. in 1969 is the equivalent to the Marvel/Disney deal.

First Flight is a great intro to anyone who (still) doesn't know who GL is or what he's about....I think that this is in good hands and am looking forward to seeing not the concept designs of costumes, but costumes and sets....those conceptuals that they leaked out are very good, and it's nice to see that they're on the right track....

Darkknight2280 2/22/2010 7:38:08 AM

Littlemikey they have seemed to be "on the ball" but i will believe it when i see it. I want to see if they can duplicate what Marvel entertainment has done as far as live action movies go. I have high hopes that they are going to pull it off by following the marvel formula. Then all the DC only guys can bow down and thank marvel for figuring it out 1st and proving it can be done! :) haha But seriously im looking forward to some spy shots and footage to see how good it looks :)

It will be a hard one to pull off since its so "out there" as far as realism. So its gonna have to be spot on to get the die hards behind it and at the same time pull in people who dont know green lantern. Will be a challenge indeed :)

It would seem that, if the architecht of the modern GL has very positive things to say about the upcoming film, it would be safe to think it was in good hands.  Maybe the "new" DC film universe is a little slow to come about, but good things come to those who wait.  And don't give Marvel all the credit.  Richard Donner got the ball rolling with first (and best) Superman film.

Darkknight2280 2/22/2010 9:23:56 AM

Yeah well its the best superman film that has been made...but far from perfect or even great in my opinion. In my opinion its only slightly better then superman returns. But i have yet to see a superman movie that wowed me andis the definitive superman film. I am hoping the one thats in development is it! :)

silversurfer 2/22/2010 9:41:48 AM

I agree with you Darkknight....we haven't gotten the definitive Superman film, which is why Donner's still is the best. It was the first time we'd seen anything like that on screen and that's why it worked. To the credit to anyone trying to make a Superman film, it isn't an easy task.....sure there's a lot of stories to be told, but how do you tell them to make them worthy of what they should be? Superman is in a class all by himself, which makes it a tall order....

I do like where Superman Returns takes the movie, in that they don't waste anytime going with an origin, but I think that now, you may need to go that way? Just my thoughts....

gauleyboy420 2/22/2010 10:38:25 AM

The AGE OF THE GREEN LANTERN IS UPON US !!!!! YEAH BITC#ES!

GL is going to blow us away, remember Iron MAn was FAR FAR FAR  FAR away from a household name until the amazing movie we got. The same will happen for GL. I think it is BECAUSE people know so little about these characters that they are so well recieved. Everyone knows Spidey, Supes, and Bats. But these B listers arent so well known out of the geek circles. people don't see them coming them WHAMMO!! sweet movie sitting in our lap.

It is GL's TURN.. I also would say that Donners Superman (diretors Cut) IS the definitive Superman film. That film is probably more responsible for fans of Superman and Comics than any other source,,,

Strong is a good choice..........can't wait to see what they do w/this.
