SUICIDE SQUAD sent on mission

DC Comics are amping up their slate of films, adding the quirky title 'Suicide Squad' to the list of properties in development as a feature film. Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have stories on the new effort.

Justin Marks, who has become the go-to-guy for comics adaptations these days, is set to pen the script for Warner Bros. Dan Lin and Lin Pictures are producing.

If you haven't read the book, 'Suicide Squad' deals with a team of DC Universe super villains who are sent by the government on highly-dangerous, covert missions. If they survive the mission they have a shot at a pardon for their crimes.

The line-up of villains has yet to be determined, except both articles acknowledge the Batman villain Deadshot is likely to top the roster.

Thanks to Antonello Blueberry for the submission.

I've never read this book but am slightly familiar with it. This sounds like a great idea to me. I wonder if they will go fully comic book with the film version or more realistic. By this I mean will they be costumed characters existing in a world where that is normal or will they go for the "Gritty & Real" and have them wearing more or less street clothes?

Ok, I'm a supervillian, I get sent on a mission that could kill me or . . . how about since I'm a villian I just escape when they let me go.  What am I missing?

This is the dirty dozen is it not?

When I first saw the headline, the first thing that came to my mind was the suicide squad from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

I said ages ago that they should do this.  I think when they were talking Inglourious Basterds and that Dirty Dozen remake.  Yes, almost, it is almost identical to DD, but with supervillains.  The way they solved the escape problem in the comic was: a) different members had differing reasons for joining, some stayed voluntarily; and b) the ones who were flight risks had explosive bracelets put on so if they took off, they lost a hand.  This was a great comic. It breathed new life into some old lame villains and made them interesting, and it let DC clean house with some dead weight.  Tired of Blockbuster? Kill him on the first mission.  Slipknot has been boring you?  Let him try to escape to see if the bracelets really work. Best part is that you don't have to use The Joker or Lex Luthor, thereby taking them out of other DC movies.  As long as the characters are interesting and the body count is high, all is good.

Shouldn't   DC be concentrating on movies like Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Superman before they release a Suicide Squad movie?

Shouldn't Marvel be concentrating on movies like X-Men, Captain America and Spider-Man before they release an Iron Man movie?

Never got into this book, my only glimpses of the squad is when they crossover to other stories. But I'd be down for this. I think it could be great fun. The semi-comedic route or the dark and gritty way, either way could work IMO.

It isn't like there's only 2 people making films for WB, they can manage to produce more than one film at a time.

You can't even compare Marvel and DC movie success the last few years.  First off a new X-men Movie is coming out this year.  It is called Wolverine.  Captain America is in development as is Spiderman 4 and 5.  You cannot take away from the Iron Man movie.  It was a Great movie.  All of those, Thor included are moving towards an Avengers movie in a few years.  You can't really argue  much with what Marvel is doing movie wise and the success they are having with it.

DC is missing the boat.  Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Superman need to be made.  As well as a Justice League movie.  These are all characters have a great history and you are going to green light a movie of B-list supervillains before The Flash is made into a movie?  Just doesn't make much sense to me.

Don't get me wrong I will probably see it.  I really would like to see a well done movie with some of their bigger stars first though.

almost. I believe they work for the government for some time then they receive a full pardon once the fullfill their time. I THINK that's how it is, unless I'm just confusing them with the Thunderbolts. Now that's a group that should get their own movie. One of the better team books out, at least prior to DR
