Box Office Report

SUPERBAD Geeks Laugh at Competition

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor
Date: Sunday, August 19, 2007

In one corner, we have a comedy from Sony, Superbad, which stars no big names (Unless Seth Rogen and Michael Sera matches up with Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig these days…) at all but has had a heavy hitting advertising campaign. In another corner, we have a historical action film from the Weinsteins, The Last Legion, which stars one or two known names but has had no advertising help whatsoever. Coming into that entertainment ring standing in the third corner is a remake of sci-fi classic, Invasion, which had plenty of advertising for Warner Bros.

Who wins?

Sony wins this weekend with a comedy starring nobody in particular (Seth Rogen being the biggest star attached.). Meanwhile, Warner Bros, doesn’t do well at all with the sci-fi remake…And the Weinsteins? They’re not even worth mentioning seeing how their film doesn’t even break the top 10. The film is another failure for their growing resume of “misses”.

Landing in the top spot this weekend is the Sony comedy, Superbad, pulling in an estimated 31.2 million for the 3-day debut. The film (produced by comedy juggernaut Judd Apatow) was launched in 2,948 theaters across the nation making its average around $10,583. This isn’t exactly eye opening numbers for a #1 film in our box office report. If anything its clear indication that school is back in session across many areas of the country and that the summer is officially closed. I doubt Sony is complaining about the moderate success of their film seeing how the budget is set at only 20 million. This first weekend has it nearly 12 mil past that mark making it a clear success for the studio.

Following behind in 2nd place is last weekend’s top earner, Rush Hour 3, starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan once again kicking Triad butt for director Brett Ratner. The buddy cop feature pulled in another 21.8 million in 3,778 theaters in its second weekend. Not bad at all for New Line and the Rush Hour franchise since it has pulled in 88.1 mil in only 10 days of release. It still has a little ways to go before it hits the 140 million budget but that shouldn’t take long once overseas numbers begin rolling in…

In 3rd place is the third installment in the Bourne franchise, The Bourne Ultimatum. This film is a very clear success for Universal Pictures chasing in another 18.9 million this weekend and dropping only 42 % from its previous weekend totals... Bourne has been out in theaters for 17 days now and has raked in 163.8 million domestically. With a budget of only 110 mil, you can see why this is a clear success. It hasn’t even been released overseas in most markets.

Fox executives are still pleased to see The Simpsons Movie do well landing in 4th place over the weekend with only a 40% drop. The comedy starring Springfield’s favorite family laughed up another 6.6 million in its 4th week of release. With a budget of only 75 mil, it has garnered 165.1 in total domestic receipts.

Now, it’s time to talk about one of those films which didn’t do so well as pointed out in the opening statement of this report. Warner Bros missed the bank even with a heavy hitting advertising campaign on their sci-fi remake, Invasion. The film starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig opened up to only 6.0 mil in 5th place this weekend in 2,776 theaters. It seems clear that it didn’t pull audiences away from the three comedies above and the Bourne adventure. No budget has been listed so we don’t really know how big of a “miss” this is...

In 6th place this weekend is another miss for director Matthew Vaughn and Paramount, Stardust. The film based off the much respected sci-fi author, Neil Gaiman, pulled in only 5.2 million in its second weekend of release. Over the first two weeks, it has only 19.0 mil in total domestic receipts. With a budget of 70 mil, it still has a ways to go for Paramount.

Following behind in 7th place is the very steady New Line musical remake Hairspray. It has been standing still in recent weeks pulling in some respectable numbers for the studio. In fact, the musical starring John Travolta broke the 100 mil barrier this morning in its fifth week of release taking in another 4.2 million over the last 3 days. Its total domestic take is now at 100.5 mil.

Landing in 8th place is the live action, Underdog, for Disney. The superhero like dog hasn’t done very well against the competition that it’s had over the past 3 weeks. Perhaps, it just didn’t have enough to draw the kids away from preparing for school. The adaptation of the cartoon pulled in another 3.6 mil over the weekend in its 2,551 theaters across the country. It now has 31.6 mil in three weeks of release.

Warner Bros may have missed the mark with Invasion but they certainly didn’t miss anything with their successful franchise, Harry Potter. The fifth adventure in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, continues to do well around the world. Here in the states it pulled in another 3.5 mil landing in 9th place. In 6 weeks of release, the magical trio (Harry, Ron & Hermione) has grabbed 278.6 million in domestic totals and another 594.0 million overseas. The total worldwide take is 872.6 million and that isn’t including this weekend’s foreign take. When the numbers are updated, by next weekend it will be very close to the 900 mil mark if not already past it.

Taking up the 10th and final place is the Universal comedy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. The firefighter comedy pulled in another 3.5 million over the weekend in 2,258 theaters. This has its domestic receipts at 110.3 million, not bad at all with its budget at 85 mil.

Things To Note:

The other film I mentioned in the opening statement was the Weinstein Company’s The Last Legion. The film opened in 2,002 theaters this weekend but pulled in only 2.5 million landing in 12th place.

Paramount & Dreamworks’ Transformers broke the 300 million mark during the last week and is now very close to toppling Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End on the top 3 Domestic Earners for the 2007 Summer Season. Its domestic total is now 306.4 million.

Pixar’s Ratatouille landed in 16th place with another 1.4 million in receipts. The film is etching very close to the 200 mil mark with a total domestic take of 196.4 million.

Superbad did better than I expected. It's worth noting that it actually opened to slightly higher numbers than Apatows/Rogen's last collaboration, Knocked Up. It'll be interesting to see if it will grow the same legs as Knocked Up, though the impending school year will be working against it.

Both The Invasion and The Last Legion opened to about half what I expected. I was on the fence about seeing The Invasion this weekend, but the ads just didn't look very compelling to me (in the end, I decided to pass seeing any movie, something of a rarity for me). We've seen the Body Snatcher formula so many times before (both remake and non-remakes), that I think there needs to be some fresh element to get people to the theaters, and I really didn't see that in the advertising.

As for The Last Legion, I think I saw the trailer twice in the theater and one TV ad, but they're all sort of hazy memories of something that looked pretty cheesy. I almost got the impression that the Weinsteins didn't want anybody to see this movie. Regardless, the execs at Miramax are probably having a good chuckle as their Jane Austen biopic just edged out Last Legion for the #11 slot.

Jarrod - regarding Invasion's budget, IMDB reports it at an estimated $50M. I think Invasion and Stardust may be joining Evan Almighy as contenders for box office bombs of the summer. Evan ultimately took in domestically almost two-thirds of its bloated $170M budget. Invasion and Stardust will be lucky to do the same against their relatively smaller budgets.

I've noticed a lot more commercials for Stardust, though obviously it isn't helping.
Also they are saying it's a great date movie. I can see that it would be, but I think it's just too out their for most of society, though I loved it. Not sure what that says about me.

"What are you doing you just cock blocked Mclovin? You're not supposed to block his cock you're supposed to guide it."

Lol. Like I've seen on a bunch of reviews, Superbad is superawesome! I loved the movie. I am Mclovin!!!!!!! That guy was funny. If you haven't seen it, check it out, I guarantee you won't come out bored out of that movie.
I doubt it will hold up to Knocked Up's numbers though but who knows.

wessmith1966 • Aug 19, 2007, 08:28pm •
Superbad was hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing. It's got to be my third favorite R rated comedy (behind Knocked Up and Porkys). The creative team behind Superbad, Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Virgin are churning out some damn funny movies.

I went to see Last Legion; I'm a sucker for those movies and a Colin Firth fan. The movie wasn't quite as bad as the trailer, but almost. It was a bad sword and sandal movie like those from the 80s with just better production values. Don't waste your money on this one; it'll be available for rent very soon.

Anyone see Invasion? I passed it up this weekend. Recommandations?

Merin • Aug 19, 2007, 11:59pm •
I saw Last Legion with trepidation.

It was pretty good. The trailers had me expecting crap, but it was actually like a mildly better Conan the Destroyer with no magical fantasy.

People comparing it to LotR and Gladiator just don't get its not like those bigger movies - it isn't some high fantasy in a magical world, and it isn't and epic historical fiction extravaganza - it's a family-friendly origin-of-myth action film about a band of warriors protecting a young royal. Not the best fantasy I've seen, but on par with Willow and Conan the Destroyer and Krull.

Possibly, though, for the less forgiving, it is a better choice as a rental.

jppintar326 • Aug 20, 2007, 05:21am •
Superbad did not look like my cup of tea. I was surprised it did so well. I thought it was a late summer also ran. Speaking of also rans, it looks like Invasion didn't do so well. I guess I did the right thing by simply buying the 1978 version of Invasion of the the Body Snatchers and skipping this version. Maybe I'll catch it on DVD. I heard the reshooting was obvious and didn't help much. Anybody see Invasion?

celt6 • Aug 20, 2007, 08:27am •
Damn, I'm closer than I thought to picking the Top 10 for the summer. Another week for Harry Potter and the foreign release of Transformers and I'll at least have the Top 5 right. (pats self on back)

Now if only I hadn't been ambushed by The Simpsons and Ratatouille. I'm kicking myself over the The Simpsons. I should have figured it would rank. But Ratatouille just blind-sided me.

I think I'm talking to myself. This is what happens when I work the graveyard shift.

On a separate note, am I the only one guessing that "War" will be about as spectacular as one of those Steven Seagal+Rap Star movies? (ie. a complete suckfest that should have been direct-to-DVD.)

bjjdenver • Aug 20, 2007, 09:27am •
Superbad is Superawesome!!

Oh God, did I just say that??

Seriously, what a great, funny movie. I can definitely see it having legs, word of mouth seems very strong for it. I laughed my ass off the whole movie.

I loved the "you scratch our backs and we'll scratch yours" scene. Classic.

bjjdenver • Aug 20, 2007, 09:30am •
Also, I went with 5 guy friends and one of the dumbasses invited his girl. She thought it would be fun to bring her two sons, probably both in the 10-14 year old range. She made them get up and leave because of the content. That made it even funnier and added to my enjoyment!!

NOTE TO PARENTS: This movie is not for kids.

NOTE TO KIDS: Find a way to see this movie!

wessmith1966 • Aug 20, 2007, 10:23am •
bjjdenver...Didn't she see the R rating and the fact that it was from the people that brought us 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up? She must not be the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.
