For the seventh season of SMALLVILLE, Clark Kent will be joined by his cousin Supergirl.

Kara was sent to Earth in a ship that arrived at the same time as Clark's ship. Her father, Zor-El, wanted her to watch over her younger cousin.  But she ended up in suspended animation for the last sixteen years. She will have all the superpowers Clark has but she will also have the ability to fly.  In addition, she will become romantically interested in Jimmy Olsen

The CW reports the role has not been cast yet.  Kara/Supergirl will join a list of DC characters that have already been  featured on the show including The Flash, Green Arrow, and Aquaman.

It will defy continuity a bit (Reeve's character made no mention of a 2nd kryptonian on the way), but it will be interesting. Maybe her character will squeeze Lana's out of the fold? This is also shades of Superman: The Animated Series. That show ended shortly after her intro.

Actually Supergirl was introduced in the second season of the Superman Animated series, and that lasted 3 seasons. Most animation last 2 or 3 tops, then they change the format, hence why Justice League was born, then Justice League unlimited where Supergirl was once again featured in a few episodes.

As for the movies, Supergirl The Movie was in the same film universe as the other 4 Superman films, and she arrived while Superman was Conviently "On a mission in space" She even used an alias making her Clark Kents "Cousin" As lame as it was, it continued the Movie franchise. I just wish they would make a better one . . .

Didn't Kara make an appearance in the third season finale of Smallville? If so, how are they going to explain this?

Supergirl the movie was so dull that it makes Superman III and IV look good by comparison. It was also one of many bad career choices Faye Dunaway made since Mommie Dearest.

There is no continuity to defy because Smallville has NEVER been a prequel to the movies.

The Kara from the third season of Smallville was not the real one. she was a human given kryptonian powers and the name by Jor-El

I think originaldave was talking about Christopher Reeve's character on Smallville, Dr. Swann, never mentioning a second ship. But that's still not a continuity error. Swann was just a human scientist looking at the sky. Just because he didn't see Kara's ship doesn't mean it didn't exist.

Supergirl in "Smallville", that ought to be very interesting. Yeah, sure...Why not. Would the Legion of Super Heroes be not far away?...I'm throwing these questions out there for anyone who cares to answer...Why did DC Comics reintroduced Superman's origins? What was wrong with John Byrnes' version? It's like DC Comics are revamping and reintroducing all the "pre-Crisis" Superman mythos, why is that? Anyone? Anyone?

Smallville's always been in its own little universe; a kind of "elseworlds' setting, so why not introduce Supergirl. With Martha gone, will Kara come stay with Clark on the farm? Smallville's always been hit or miss for me, but other than Lana's boring character, it's been fun to watch.

For Rao's sake why do you guys have to nitpick about continuity and Smallville not jiving with your funnybooks? Smallville is a television series. It may have shades of the Movies or Comics but it's a different animal. If the TV series were to just rehash everything from the movies/comics what would be the point of watching it? I welcome Supergirl and I'll bet she'll be smokin hot... hopefully she'll be very fond of miniskirts too.

Which continuity does it deny? The films, cartoons, comics? This is pretty inline with the current comics canon, although Kara arrived a bit later in Superman's life. And regarding this killing Smallville...the plan is likely to end the show this year anyway, so I wouldn't blame it on Supergirl.

And while it is off-topic PopeyesBitch, the same argument was made in the mid-80s when Silver Age lovers asked why the origins THEY knew were being thrown out. These comics have been written over decades, and sometimes things change or get revised. It is the nature of comic books.

A last note, while pre-Crisis-reminiscent elements seem to be prominent at DC right now, keep in mind that most pre-Crisis elements were reintroduced during the 86-06 period anyways, just with slightly different origins. We've gotten Krypto, Kandor, many Supergirls, Bizarros, etc

I have been a Smallville fan since the pilot episode and while not every episode has been the greatest, the show is still enjoyable to watch. I have always been a Superman fan and it doesn't bother me a single bit that it doesn't follow the comics or movie mytho's. It's just entertainment and I for one am glad that the show is back for a 7th season, and hopefully one more next season before they call it quits. Any ideas for the cast of Supergirl? I wouldn't mind seeing Kristen Bell playing Supergirl now that Veronica Mars is over, but that probably won't happen. They should bring Sarah Carter back to the show to play Supergirl. Nah, scratch that. That would be too weird since Clark hooked up with her previous character. Yeah, I got nothing. Anyone have any ideas?
