Superman Celebration - Part 2

By Aaron Andrews     June 20, 2008

Continuing Aaron Andrew's visit to Metropolis for the Superman Celebration. In Part 1, Aaron gave an overview of the carnival like event, and presented a Q & A with actors Ned Beatty (Otis in the original Superman movies) and Noel Niell (Lois Lane from the original TV series).

He also presented the first half of a fan Q & A as 'Smallville' star Allison Mack joined Beatty and Niell. We joing the Q & A in progress.

Q: What is it like playing Chloe and get to act with Tom Welling?

Allison Mack: I get a kink in my neck, ‘cause he’s so tall he’s about a full foot taller than I am! So it gets a little uncomfortable some time! Tom is an amazing amazing man, he’s very kind and generous and loving and working with him is a real joy. He’s creative and tenacious. Working with him is a real pleasure.

Q: Allison, are you as good at hacking computers in real life as in 'Smallville'?

Allison Mack: I am a total technophobe, I am horrible on computers. The fact that I can pass a computer genius in any way is kind of a miracle.

Q: For Ned Beatty...did you enjoy making shooter?

Ned Beatty: Yes. (pause)

(crowd laughter)

A lot of it was actually shot on a glacier north of Vancouver in Canada.

Allison: Actually it’s the same glacier that we shot the fortress of solitude on season 4.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the prom with Clark?

Allison Mack: what’s my favorite part of the prom with Clark? I like it when he has to carry me super speed! I’m like “Ah!” Um but yeah that was actually the scene was funny, I pick him up from the farm. And they are always putting me in super high heels because he’s so much taller than I am and they are asking me to run, next to Tom Welling and usually in high heels and very tight clothing. So this was another example of super rocky bizarre ground super high heels and very fitted dress. Then tom, I went to get out of the car, it was this beautiful moment and I fell (gesturing) right into him he was like “good morning!” sweetly “good morning Tom!”

Q: In the season finale, what exactly happens with you and Brainic?

Allison Mack: In the season finally what happens with Braniac and I? He did this finger thing on me, the finger thing. Where he sticks his finger, you guys know if you watch the show, you know a finger thing! It’s really so weird filming scenes like that, James Marsters is an amazing actor (crowd applause) and he’s standing over me going like this and there’s nothing there I’m going like that! Ok! I think it’s because I have this massive amount of power, healing power. And I’m able to heal myself and fight against negative energy. It was an example of how I do that.

Q: How will that affect season 8?

Allison Mack:Wwe have a lot of new characters coming in season 8.

Q: Is it true that Justin Hartman is coming back?

Allison Mack: Yes, I believe that Justin is coming back for a little bit. That’s the last I heard.

Q: This is for Ned and Allison, can you give a little anecdote about Lex Luthor. Your take on Lex Luthor.

Ned Beatty: I want to hear more about Lex in Smallville.

Allison Mack: Michael Rosenbaum is a fantastic actor that plays Lex Luthor. I’ve never met anyone that can switch in and out of a character as fast as Michael. I don’t know if any of you have had the opportunity to meet him, but he’s really the funniest, goofiest most outrageous, silly man that I’ve ever met! And when you watch him on camera he’s like so dead on, he can go from a ridiculous strip tease with a Christopher Walken impersonation in there to like zooming in telling you that he’s going to take your parents farm and destroy your life! He’s kind of incredible, you know. There’s always a story with Michael. He came to set one day and he felt that the energy was low and so he started to break dancing! He wears Armani suits and his clothes are really nice on the show, and he’s spinning on his back and doing pull-ups on the set trying to get everybody going and the poor producers are like, the producers are like “oh God, there goes about a few thousand dollars, thanks Michael!” but he’s funny!

Q: there are a list of special guests that have appeared on the show like Tom Wopat and some others; I was wondering if anyone else here like Noel or anyone else here will be making a special appearance.

Allison Mack: Well I don’t know! I’ll make the suggestion!

Q: when do you start filming back up in Vancouver? Do you know what date yet, is it July? Do you know what day?

Allison Mack: July, yes. At about 6:42am

Q: My best friend is obsessed about you; he’s in love with you. Is there any way I can get a picture with you?

Allison Mack: Yes, well, not right now but I’ll be here the rest of the day.

He needs it. He needs it? Just like someone needs food and air!

Q: How do you feel about Doomsday coming to 'Smallville'?

Allison Mack: And then there’s Doomsday coming to the show! I’m real excited; I’m looking forward to this season. We have the opportunity to adding some really awesome new characters that we’ve never seen before we’re going to explore some of the darker things and get away from the Kryptonite stuff so it should be, uh; I think it’ll be really exciting.

Q: What was your favorite episode and why.

Allison Mack: What was my favorite episode and why? My goodness..

Q: Any background stories anything we’d be interested in hearing about?

Allison Mack: Ah.. I loved, actually I really liked the episode called “freaked” directed by Michael Rosenbaum. I liked it for a number of different reasons. It was the episode where my character finds out she’s um, that she has these superpowers; I think it was really cool and exciting for me just as an actress to play. Then it was really awesome working with Michael as a director, he was really incredibly passionate and emphatic and enthusiastic and it got everybody going. And so that was a real thrill.

Q: Allison, will we be seeing the caves again anytime on Smallville?

Allison Mack: I don’t know I’m not sure to be honest; they’re really uncomfortable to film in! So we try and stay, stay away from them because they’re very very small. So it’s hard when we have the entire crew in there trying to work. We try to stick with the sets that are on the lot, like the Daily Planet and Luthor Mansion and places like that we film in because they are much more comfortable. So I’m not sure, we may be back but we may be not.

Q: Will Chloe’s powers, will we see more of her powers in season 8?

Allison Mack: You’ll defiantly see my powers develop in season 8, absolutely. There are so many questions that have been unanswered as far as what the powers are and how they work. I think you’ll start to see me harness them and see what I can do, which I think will be really cool.

Come back Monday for the third and final installment of the Superman Celebration
