SUPERMAN Flying Circles in Development Hell

Warner Bros. Executives are wondering what to do.

It's on again. It's off again. It's on again. It's off again. That seems to be the circle of rumor madness around Superman: Man of Steel. Just two weeks ago, we had confirmations from the trades that Bryan Singer was still attached to direct the sequel while executives were accepting story pitches on who should be the villain. Fast forward to today and Variety's Anne Thompson reports those same executives as now suggesting the possibility of rebooting the franchise once again.

They too believe that the last movie didn't break the mold and wound up in some kind of middle limbo. Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project. There are no writers working on a Superman script now. The studio wants to figure it out. "It might be better to start from scratch," one exec admitted.

Director Singer has confirmed a few times over the past year that now that the character has been reintroduced, audiences can expect more action in his sequel and executives have been confirmed as saying they want more action in the upcoming sequel as well. This latest introduction into the ongoing struggle between Superman and development hell suggests that all may not be well in the world of the man of steel for Warner Bros.

Okay, so Mr. Singer screwed up, but at least you can tell, like The X-Files 2 and like Ang Lee's Hulk, he was trying for an ambitious low-key tone that didn't quite work. I think Mr. Singer should at least do an outline, instead of relying on such young writers. It should be darker and more realistic in terms of taking things to their logical conclusion. What if Superman is tempted to use his powers for ill. There was little acknowledgment that using x-ray vision to look into Lois Lane's family life was a violation of their privacy. Okay, now that I think about it, the little kid superman thing was lame as well. Still, he should be given another shot, but really try coming up with the themes or what he wants to say about the world and maybe outline a story and then find a brilliant writer to help him. The world doesn't need anymore simplistic good versus evil storylines. I trust this guy. He made comic book movies actually cool and realistic, at some level. He just needs to push things dramatically. I hope he gets that chance and uses it well.

Damn right, Mulfeld. Why does superman have to spend 2 hours to be "reintroduced?" Did Singer spend his 90 minutes in the first X-Men introducing them, or did he just jump into an awesome movie? I guess when you bring a character back, you need to spend more time getting to know him then when you met him the first time. (be careful with saying supes should be tempted to use his powers for ill. singer already remade superman 1, let's not get him remaking superman 3 with seth rogen or some other comic dujour)

I know a lot of you guys have mixed emotions on SR and I am one of them as well. I pretty much loved the look of the movie and I really like Routhe in the role. I was annoyed that it was the same movie I saw when it was called Superman, but i understood why Singer did that. I am also one of the ones who didn't like Supes having a son, I agree with some of you that maybe they should kill off the son, if it be Lex or another villan. I don't mind Lex being back as long as he isn't the main villan. I would love to see Braniac, bizarro, DarkSeid, and even Doomsday, whoever they get I want Agent Smith vs Neo type action. I would like them to forget a re-boot and just fix it from here. But that's me. I'm just sayin.

Fuck Singer. I don't want him to get another shot at remaking Donner's work. Fuck him. If he had done his own shit instead of doing the same movie Donner made back in the day there wouldn't be this problem today.
The kid was a horrible idea and the only way to get rid of him is to reboot the franchise without him. Just do what they did with the Hulk, new cast, new writers, new everything.
Listen to Millar, he seems to be passionate about doing a Superman movie and he even has a director. Get some creative people involved in Superman, not someone who is up on Donner's nuts.

WB needs to definitely reboot, recast Superman. Since everyone already knows the story of Superman, what they should do is, cast all the main guys from the Superman universe, Supes, Lex, Lois etc and use them in a Justice League movie. After the release of JL they can work on a Superman movie with that same cast. Keep Lex from being the main villain and make Lex LEX! You know, owner of Lexcorp! How bout we see that in Supes? Enough with Lex the real estate schemer!!!
Give the Wachowskis a shot at directing Superman. They are WB guys, like comics. Were involved with V for Vendetta which was nice. I know they flopped with Speed Racer but I'll be damn if they can't direct action. The Matrix Revolution battle between Smith & Neo at the end is what a new Superman film needs.

I'd rather see Green Lantern & JL movies before they come out with a new Superman anyway.
2010- GL by Alex Proyas.
2011- TDK2 by Chris Nolan
2012 - JL by Alfonso Cuaron
2013 - Superman by the Wachowskis.
And in between those maybe try to sneak someone else in (Flash, WW) like Marvel did this summer with Iron Man & Hulk.

I hope they start from scratch and that TDK has shown WB how get their heroes up and running. Do it WB. DO.IT.!!!

Do a new trilogy with Superman.

Jim Sturgess/Henry Cavill = Superman
Rachel McAdams = Lois Lane
Hugh Laurie = Perry White
Anton Yelchin = Jimmy
Guy Pearce = Lex Luthor.

Braniac for the first film "The Man of Steel" and end the film with a shot of Doomsday setting up for the sequel.
Doomsday someone else(Metallo?) for the second film "Death of Superman". Maybe have Doomsday just be towards the end of the film like they did with Venom in Spiderman3. Doomsday vs. Superman battle to end the film. Funeral with the cast of the JL movie attending, shot of coffin without no Superman, end movie. With the JL movie going on this would be a perfect chance for them to make a cameo in Metropolis and it could then even be used for JL sequel where they are dealing with their team without Superman and can then bring in someone else into the JL group. Like Green Arrow who hopefully by that time has escaped from SuperMAX.
3rd movie "Superman Lives" Lexcorp got a hold of Superman DNA after the Doomsday battle and created Bizzaro.

Just give us a frickin movie. Everyone knows who he is. Please don't start over.

Singer is a hack when it comes to comic book movies. X-Men 1 & 2. While some of it was good, he sacrified a lot of the comic book book feel for making a more "realistic" movie. Hmmm...I think he copped out, especially after seeing Spider-Man, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight. Realistic doesn't mean ignore the source material. And then theirs his lazy arse filmmaking with Superman Returns: The almost scene-by-scene remake of a good film because he couldn't come up anything original. Get rid of Singer and get someone who will respect the source material more and will give us a new story.

Just as I said in another thread DC/Warner Bros cant do anything right (Cept TDK...hehe) Maybe they just need to allow Marvel to buy them out so Marvel can then in turn make an AWESOME Superman movie, and a great Green Lantern Movie and so on and so forth. I think that's the only way its going to get done right. Superman Returns was way off from what it needs to be. I wouldnt go as far as calling it a bad movie, just ehhh.

Just like my man hanso I've never stopped voicing my displeasure with Singer's SR. The kid, Lex as the real estate aficionado, Bosworth as the irresponsible mother L.Lane, the retreaded storyline, etc, etc Glad The WB apparently has taken notice of the fans' displeasure and acting accordingly. Would Singer stick around if he had to do away with what he created? I doubt it. Maybe they can use Routh for the JLA film if they plan on recasting the SM franchise. Or the hell with it just get rid of everybody so we don't have any reminders in the future and let's change the title to "What If" like Marvel and pretend it never really happened.

I too on many occasions have voiced my displeasure about SR Returns so most of you know where I stand on the whole thing...

Hanso...I think the studio might be preparing us for a change with this news, meaning Millar might be the guy they are going to go with because of the passion he has for the material and I would be fine with that...Unfortunatly I can only agree with two of your picks for the recast, one being Guy Pierce as Lex because he just has the fucking killer acting chops to pull him off well plus I saw him as a bolo head once and he can pull of the look of Lex and of course Rachel McAdams would make a great Louis Lane hands down and now that I think about it Hugh Laurie would make a great Perry White...All the other actors not so much and your idea of JLA first then go from there, no good, especially the part where they make a JLA movie...

This is what I would do...Have a villain that can give Supes a rough time be it Brainiac, Doomsday or whoever then have Lex with Lex corp pulling strings in the background, like set up his own little mafia type of group that causes chaos all over the city while Supes it battling the big bad guy and by doing this, trying to where down supes cause he knows supes will try and fight crime and save people while battling this super villain and at the same time Lex corp needs to have a science department coming up with different ways to fuck Supes in regards to all the different types of Kryptonite they can use and apply to different things for instants, when Supes goes to get Lex and throw his ass in the slammer Lex's science department found a way to use Kryptonite in a force field, who know different things like that...Whatever happens they need to find more ingenious ways to use Lex as a bad guy and just drop the whole two bit scammer I want more land type of character, Lex comes from money, there should be no reason that he is scamming old woman out of theres...These are just my ideas and mean very little in a world crazy... P.S. do not start over WB
