SUPERMAN on Hold, JLA Trouble Continues

Remember that Anne Thompson article two weeks ago where she reminded us the progress of the 3 WB comic franchises? Well, she's done it again but elaborated a bit more on the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel sequel in the past day. She's also once again said that no matter what the "official" word is at this point, don't expect a JLA production until the strike is resolved. Nothing too shocking on the JLA front as everyone has been wondering when/if that production will ever get rolling. I could give you ten links over the past month about the JLA production but I'll just pass along what Maniac Hanso brought up in the Wolverine news, the latest from EW.  All of this continues to be a speculation game until someone from WB decides to give us a press release..

Here's the latest from Anne;

No screenwriters are on board. "Returns" writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris opted out of penning "Superman: Man of Steel," and the strike arrived just as other scribes were to pitch ideas. Internally, Warners has moved the release date from 2009 to 2010.

After "Superman Returns" delivered a disappointing box office take of $386 million worldwide, Warner Bros. and Singer debated how to proceed with the next "Superman" pic. The studio even considered rebooting the franchise with someone else.

But eventually WB execs Alan Horn and Jeff Robinov agreed to proceed with Singer at the helm of a $170 million "Man of Steel" packed with more action, a super-powered villain and less romantic melodrama. Before Singer started production on UA's "Valkyrie," WB and co-financier Legendary Pictures closed a deal for him to produce and direct "Superman: Man of Steel."

According to a spokesman for the director's reps at William Morris," 'Superman' is moving forward with Bryan Singer attached." But inside the studio, "Superman" is not on any fast track, and word is that Singer may wind up not directing it.

Some ideas for Man of Steel:
-Luthor creates a villain (Doomsday) by poisoning a fellow inmate with a grain-sized piece of kryptonite.
-Supe's son is tricked into thinking mom and dad (Marsden) were killed, with Supes failing to save them. Luthor takes him and raises him to hate (and ultimately try to kill) Superman.
- Dozens of Kryptonians head to earth after they detect two of their own kind living there. Among the refugees: Brainiac. Mayhem ensues.
Wessmith's idea is good too. Yes that was a compliment.

Peepa gonna die?
Easy Jar Jar
I'm on record as NOT being a fan of Returns. But unlike, say, X3 & Ratner, I saw what Singer was trying to do and I think he's got a great Superman film in him. He just needs to get over his Donner fetish. I'm all for giving him another shot. I'd rather see them get rid of Routh than Singer. No Zod (Zod 2008 though)! Yes more action. Keep the kid (I said it). Keep Marsden (said that too). More original shiite like that but keep that Donner feel. Please just stop cribbing plot points from him.
Oh. And Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as BA Baracus.

Orignialdave I'll fess up to being drunk but did you just edit out the relevance of me Jar Jar crack or am I that drunk?

I too am drunk. I don't see the relevance. So I think the answer to your question is yes, joeybaloney.

Returns was the best film of '06. Can't wait for the next one!

I agree. Returns was indeed awesome.

Personally, I would like it if they just axed the entire idea that Superman now has a son. I think it detracts from the movie and the mythos as a whole. Fix that and then add in either Darkseid or Mongul or hell even Braniac as the main villian with Luthor as a background player and that would solve a lot of gripes about Superman Returns.

I don't care if Luthor makes a cameo but one of my biggest problems with the second and fourth movies was Luthor being the main villian. (Even teaming up with Zod in II.) Since they rebooted the series in Return, his being in that one was fine. Superman has a whole rogues gallery like Batman but no one knows this because Luthor is used all the time. You definitely need a super-powered villian like Brainiac or Parasite for the next film. Hell, even Metallo would work. I'd personally hold off on Darkseid or Doomsday until the third movie. They can even keep the kid angle as it didn't bother me.

My biggest problem continues to be the kid. I was hoping they would replace Singer and reboot the franchise just to do away with this horrendous mistake. Since apparently that's not the case I hope he can admit to himself that he was wrong on this front and find a way to rectify it. And recast Lois' role, please.
SR was not a reboot, it was a continuation from part 2. That's how it was approached.

Sorry, I didn't mean "reboot" in that sense. I meant it in the "hadn't been a movie of the franchise in awhile" kind of reboot...

I don't have a problem with the kid in the sense that Superman movies and TV series, seemingly more than any other character, have no continuity links. The fact that they built off what was established in II is step in the right direction. The kid is a logical progression from II in my opinion but I could honestly take or leave him...
