In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, Bryan Singer revealed a few interesting tidbits regarding where he takes the franchise's mythology.

There are no real spoilers below.

Discussing the new direction the movie takes the mythology, Singer said: "I hope it has some effect, because I think it's interesting". It was the biggest challenge for me, and yet for me, it was very necessary, because I wanted to create an obstacle that was so great that even Superman couldn't penetrate it or avoid it."

Singer also mentioned that if he does any sequels, the change will play a part.

Its probably that Superman has a kid or something, like that. That`s definitely something that he can't "penetrate or avoid".

I could see that being it as well. Although, I would assume that means the kid Lois has in the movie was Clark's from before he left earth. Or maybe the change is that everyone figures out Clark is Superman, leaving him with no secret identity. This seems much less likely than the kid thing, however. Singer has certainly piqued my interest. I really hope this movie is good.

Have a child with who? Superman cannot mate with human females. He would need a Kryptonian female. And whatever the change is, I'm sure it'll turn out fine. Afterall, Lois Lane's character was changed. She has a son. I'm looking forward to Superman Returns and many sequels.

Superman slept with Lois Lane in Superman II at the Fortress of Solitude, when he temporarily lost his powers. So her son could be his boy, as well.

"an obstacle that was so great that even Superman couldn't penetrate it or avoid it."
That would be child support!
I can see the headlines now..."Superman Deadbeat from Krypton"
I mean he hooks up with Lois, kisses her, she forgets the whole thing, then he skips town for however many years, then returns when he finds out Lois is with another guy!

Singer's really tried to humanize Superman in this movie from everything I've read so far and i think that's a good thing; gives the character somewhere to go in future movies. I've read some reviews of the movie over at AICN, so if you want spoilers, read them. I wasn't sold on Routh as Big Blue, and I didn't care much for the costume revamp, but I must admit that the more I see the commercials, the more i like what I see. I'm very excited to see this movie.

For those of you who guessed >>SPOILER ALERT

#4 That makes a lot of sense considering Singer has said that I and II are the canon for this installment.

I don't really like when a child is installed into a lone hero`s life, whether it be there`s or not. I mean I know that it humanizing the character and shows that they are vulnerable, and also that it can be used as motivation to fight that much harder against huge obstacles. I just don't know if its right for Supes. He already has the whole world to fight for and you can't personalize it any more than his feelings for Lois(I mean, the man reversed time to save her ass)I just really don't see the point of it. This movie won't suffer for it, but the sequels might. Not that the Zorro movie was great, but the addition of the son, was kind of corny. The son in Mummy Returns was better, but still seemed corny. Hopefully these won't be.

Just another reason why SuperBOY Returns will suck.
