"Superman Returns" sequel: Shorter, tighter, action-packed

In an interview with Sci Fi Wire the co-writer of Superman Returns, Michael Dougherty, talked about the upcoming sequel.

"I think it's going to be a more action-oriented film," he said. "Again, the easy comparison to make was [X-Men] to X2, or Star Trek [The Motion Picture] to Star Trek II. I mean, I know that Bryan has said he's going to Wrath of Khan it, and by that he means, 'Let's take what we've already established—we've gotten that out of the way—and let's just make it shorter, tighter and more action-packed."

When asked if him and partner Dan Harris would be back for the sequel to write the script, he replied: "We're talking.  We're bouncing ideas around with Bryan. Big ideas. Action-packed ideas."

KJ's Take:  I am in the slight minority in the fact that I actually really enjoyed Superman Returns.  I had no problems with the pacing or supposed lack of action.  That said, they have set up the character, so why not add some more action?   Just be careful not to go the way of Pirates of the Caribbean 2.   That movie was filled with action and turned out to be a giant waste of my time.  In fact, it was a disgrace of a sequel to one of the best action adventure films ever made.  *Steps off Soap Box*

no desire, don't care at all. superman is a love em or hate em super hero. you either love him bc of the time he represents or you hate him like i do bc he is pretty much invincible and has absouletely no moral dillemas. Oh yeah, KJ, can you please stop tearing on Pirates 2, you say you like this garbage but you hate pirates, personally it doesn't make much sense to me. In all honestly the casting for this movie sucked, i was under the impression that lex and clark kent were friends at a younger age even before "Smallville" and if thats right then why is kevin spacey, lex luthor? its a huge age gap, i'm sorry but i'll stick to "Batman Begins." I love the direction Nolan has taken it and he has completely redeemed it, even the titles are great, "The Dark Knight." I love it

I probably won't see it, unless I hear the kid and boyfriend are killed in an accident.

Kirk: Khaaaan!
Superman: Zaaaaahd!

Who cares.

I get it ! superman and superboy together ....I agree with the previous one, kick the kid out of the story !

If Superman had a son with Lois in the comics, it would be okay? IF the next issue of SUperman introduces his son will it be acceptable? I hate the notion/prejudice that only comics are allowed to be the source of new/original storylines for superheroes and movies are only allowed to follow the comics.

Yes, Comics are the main source. Sorry to burst your bubble. If you want a movie that doesn't need to be like a comic....then well, make up your own super-hero movie. Look at Sin City, That is the way to go. They knew exactly what they are doing. bmfstunner, you do not know much about Superman comics, so don't talk about it. I HATED Superman Returns, it was choppy and it did lack action KJ. It made little sense, and tell me this KJ, why rehash the same plot from the original? And the writers saying that it is like Xmen to X2 is ridiculous! Xmen one had plenty of action. Again, I HIGHLY doubt the Sequel will be made. The first was lackluster, I think DC will go the Marvel route and get the controls back in their hands. Pirates 2 was fantastic. It was fun and it knew how to please. Davy Jones and Depp were awesome. When it ended I was like what? Now I have to wait for the third one? When SR ended I was like, THANK GOD!!!! When children have to be woken up when SR ends that is a bad sign. BAD SIGN! My dauhgter enjoyed Superman II the Richard Donner cut more than SR. KJ, I cannot believe you actually enjoyed SR. Now when I read your columns (if I do....but you seem to be the only person who reports about movies and shows) it will be with bias.

I also actually liked Superman Returns... that is until I watched the original like 2 weeks ago. I hadn`t seen it in awhile and I was really surprised how similar in content the 2 movies were, except that the original was way better. Singer who I`m a big fan of , gave it way too much of the same feeling, even the same damn Luthor plot of getting LAND. I wanted something new in Superman Returns. Giving him a kid was new, but stupid. Kate Bosworth to me was not a good Lois Lane and there wasn`t enough action. Spacey who I also liked pretty much played Gene Hackman playing Lex Luthor. He is definitely going to have to do alot more in this sequel.

My problem with Superman Returns was just like ponyboy said, it was a rehash of the original movie that just wasn't quite as good. Shorter, tighter and more action-packed is definitely the way to go. I didn't like the kid either, but because the character of Superman is kind of flat (no pun intended on my name) there has to be some element of personal torment and conflict for him to make it interesting.

I am on the minority also. I loved SR!! I did not have a problem at all with pace and the story. Did not seem a re hash to me. Of course Lex wants land that what he wanted in the first one so makes sense to continue to find another way to get land again and he found it. It is the same character after all. And if the sequel will have more action then I am all for that too. Of course there is going to be a sequel theCollector. Just becuase you ahted it does not mean the rest of the world did. It was a hit. And I also enjoyed Dead Man's Chest. Do not know why that gets a bad rap. Just can not please everyone. SO bring on the SR sequel. I'll be there.

I loved Superman as well. Yeah the movie wasn't action packed per say but what was there was great. I even worked on the IMAX 3D version of the film and spent two months seeing the action sequences over and over again and still enjoyed the rest of the movie. And sorry to burst your bubble theCollector but Sin City was adapted from the Frank Miller comic books so I'm not sure you are making your point. I agree with Westend. I used to read comic books as a kid but now that I don't, I don't mind if they innovate stories in the movies that don't originate in the comics. Why not?

Superman Returns was a great film. And, for the record Bmfstunner, in watching the film, I saw quite a few moral delimmas. Let's see, the situation with him and his son, whom he cannot get involved with both for the safety of Lois and her family and because Lois is married and they think the other other guy is the daddy. Not to mention the blatant issue he has with Lois being married and Superman's desire to seduce Lois was displayed very well while showing that he was exercising moral restraint. And, he is "slightly" obsessed with her... going to her home and spying on her... thats a pretty big moral issue. Plus, the entire flick was about a normal guy with no powers, almost defeating superman... which showed that Superman is not invincible. Superman is not too bright, and that has always been portrayed. He is brawn over brains and is really confused about his place in the world. Which is why Batman was able to go at him too. I still think they plan on going the Dragonball Z route with little Gohan using his powers when there is a threat...
