Superman Homepage is offering a rare photo of SUPERMAN RETURNS' Brandon Routh, in his Superman costume, holding up a car from the August 10th filming in Martin Place (Sydney).

They also have two video files. The first shows Bryan Singer doing his Superman impersonation. Singer shows Brandon how he wants him to position himself for this scene.

The second video is a quick shot of Routh (not in costume) and Singer beneath the car as they discuss the scene.

Brian Singer did a pretty good job with the Xmen, and I trust that he will put that same style and skill into the Superman movie, but is it just me or does this Brandon Routh guy just really not look the part, the suit is cool and the guy is in great shape, but when i see the guy, it just doesn't look like I would picture Supes. I don't know, I could be nuts.... Opinions Anyone...

I think the biggest thing thatmakes him not look the part, for me anyway, is the suit he's wearing in the above photo. For some reason, it just doesn't look right to me. I think it might be becasue the shield is so small, leaving an ocean of blue between it and his belt, which also curves down and away from the shield. I think I would also prefer the good old red to the newer crimson I think. The other problem is that he isn't Christopher Reeve, who I'll have a tough time replacing as Superman in my mind. Who knows, though? After seeing the movie he may be an excellent Superman, or not. I won't pass judgement before it comes out (do we know when that is by any chance?).

In every picture I've seen, he looks too boyish. He doesn't look "established" enough to be the post-collegiate professional Clark Kent. He's also a bit too lean. Reeve was bulkier, and looked like an adult. Routh just looks too young (granted, these are still photos, and he might come across very different on film). It's not the costume. Some people get it in their heads that there is some "definitive" version of the costumes of comic book super heroes, but it simply isn't true. The size of the shield and other details have been changing continuously since the character was first introduced.

The three Supermen: Christopher Reeve, George Reeves, and Dean Cain (by far the weakest). (Tom Welling still has never worn the costume and Superboy doesn't count.) Now we have the new Superman and I sorta agree, his face is too soft, even with the cleft chin. BUT I've read he has Clark Kent down, so there is at least something. Gotta give him a chance... and how come no one's complaining about Kate Bosworth as Lois.

Jesus more sad bastards.
So some of you won't see this movie due to his costume not being the shade of blue you desire, and some won't see it due to him lookin young.
As someone you have probably never herd of once said
"I specialize in makin people look stupid. .i don't need to bother here"

I don't see anybody above stating they weren't going to see the movie because of the size of the shield, the color or the way he looks. That said, yeah, the shield is a bit small and the guy just doesn't have the good ol' country boy look to him like his predecessors did including Tom Welling. He looks more like SuperBoy than Big Blue. If the story is great I can see me overlooking such minor details.

I'm all for a well-done Superman film and I do hope that this one good, but, it still seems like Christopher Reeves is still on our minds that coupled with the great performance by Tom Welling in Smallville.

It doesn't matter to me that Welling hasn't worn the costume. To million of Smallville fans he is the next incarnation of Superman and Warner Bros would have been smart to end the series after five seasons then follow him into the movies. Now there will undoubtedly be continuity issues and TV vs. Movie debates (like this one). We'll see, but I wish they would have taken the path I just described above.

BTW: I agree Dean Cain's Sup was the weakest one ever.

There is just a really annoying trend right now in Hollywood to cast really young actors with little to no credibility in roles that do not fit their age. I like to call this the "WB trend". Basically all these actors and actresses look like they belong on the WB network starring in a crappy teen drama show like Dawson's Creek or the OC. Why they are being chosen for big budget movies is beyond me.

I have to agree with balkaster. Routh is far too boyish and looks way too scrawny to play the man of steel. I still stand by my initial thoughts and that is that they should have cast someone older and more chisled. Someone reminicent of the Superman we have come to know from Alex Ross's paintings. I would have even loved to see a hint of grey hair! Routh could pass as superboy but a Superman he is not!

I also have to agree scoxocs with the choice of Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. Again I feel they should have gone with someone a bit older and more established. It looks like they wanted to try to adapt Superman for the same audience of Spiderman. But this was a mistake. Spiderman works with young actors because the comic was always set up with teenage and young adult characters. That's why you can cast a boyish- looking actor like Toby McGuire in the role of spidey and really hit the mark. This is totally not the case with Superman.

That said, I'm in no way saying this movie shouldn't be seen. I just don't agree with the casting. As for the costume, well I think you guys have already touched on the stuff I don't like about it. Shield's to small and the whole thing looks too much like Evil Supes from Superman 3. Just my 2 cents.
