Now that the WGA strike is over, it seems Superman: Man of Steel--the sequel to Superman Returns---is back in business for director Bryan Singer. The director updated the status to Empire Online where he mentions the script development is beginning right now. He also reconfirmed earlier quotes of this sequel being more of an action film centering on the world of the DC superhero.

"But, yes, I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel...with the intention of directing it."

Singer knows that there was some negative reaction to the fact that the first film focused more on story at the expense of action and is looking to redress that next time.

“The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film,” he says. “I’ll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels.."

What kind of bullshit is that? The characters were established long before Singer was even directing movies...His lack of vision and blatant rip off has come full circle and bit him in the ass, most of the fans of this comic character have said so and so we get an excuse like, this was a romantic and nostalgic film, ya right...Just don't screw this second movie up and I can find forgiveness even then, if he is still going to bullshit his way through all the criticism with the lame ass excuses as to why the first one was what it was, then eat my shorts Singer!

i'll accept that. i mean there is a new and younger audience out there too and us old heads know a lot more about previous superman films and his origin but i'm hoping the next film is much more aggressive than the first.

also i'm ready to see a live action version of the Superman vs. Doomsday battle! Imagine the intense action and carnage in that.

Raa...So am I but I hope for a battle like that to take place on earth on maybe on a few other planets in our system just to change up the scenery and what not...

I really like the "own up to it without making any apologies" line. And Singer goes up another notch in my estimation.

That said - even if he directs it, I'm not paying money to see live-action Doomsday. F that.

Merin...Now that I think about it, your right...If something like that is going to be done it has to come somewhere down the road, way down the road...I know you liked SR and that's cool but I hope Singer takes this next installment to a place much higher and shows us something we have yet too see...

Yep, I liked SR as well and can't wait for Man of Steel. It's obvious that I want this one in theaters more than any WB-distributed JLA film. And if Singer chooses to pump up the action angle, that's cool with me but I bet a lot of fan expectations are hinging upon which villain will be on the hot seat this time.

Spacey is confirmed as returning as Luthor but it will likely be a limited role and not be as the main baddie.

So who? Who can attract audiences in the same context as Batman taking on the Joker?

Jarrod...Good question...Does this bad guy have to fit in the same time line that we already know about? It seems to me that these bad guys from comics come fast and furious, one right after the other so can a few of them be skipped in order to get to the bad guy that best fits a live action movie...Whatever happens I want too see a bad guy who can actually give SM a run for his money...

I think that they could put in nearly any bad guy beside Luthor most people dont now who other Superman Baddies are that have not watched the cartoon or are into the comics. This movies just need to have Less Luthor Less Lois and more action. And yes He needs to be up against someone who he could lose to like Brainiac, or Metallo, Maybe have him do off world and find War World and fight Mongo, I would love to see Darkside or Doomsday but i think you would need the JLA for those to. But if you going to have Luthor in any way for gods sake get with the times and make him a clever buisnessman now instead of the petty crook with land scemes and I am still mad the Supes has a kid that was just stupid

While over all I didn't mind Superman Returns, the biggest problem I had with the movie was the lack of continuity. Essentially this movie is supposed to take place 5 years after Superman II. At the end of that movie Superman made Lois forget everything with the Vulcan mind meld kiss. Which means that according to this movie she really should not have know that Superman was the father of her child because she wouldn't have had any memory of having sex with him. Of course once the boy lobbed a a piano it would become fairly obvious that Superman was the father. Howeve, I would think that a woman would be rather pissed to find out that Superman had sex with her and made her forget the whole thing. So I think part of the story since the kid is no part of Singer's Superman univers has to deal with those ramaifications between Lois and Superman. I also think that they should stay away from using Zod again as it would just end up to people commenting that Singer cannot be original with this frachise. While I dislike how many of these Superhero movies tend to use the Super villian team up, I think it might be appropriate here because Superman is so powerful. Perhaps Parasite and Metallo as an example.
