We have another official casting announcement for Warner Bros. Pictures and director Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot of the Superman franchise. While the studio says nothing about the recent reports of Kevin Costner circling Jonathan Kent or Viggo Mortensen possibly playing General Zod, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are ready to confirm that Diane Lane will be joining the franchise as the next Martha Kent, wife to Jonathan "Pa" Kent and adoptive mother of Kal-El.

Lane is the second official addition to the cast behind Henry Cavill, who's set to play the title character.

Here's the official press announcement:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder stated, "This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."

Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama "Unfaithful." She most recently starred in the family hit "Secretariat." She next stars in the HBO feature "Cinema Verite," opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane's long list of film credits also includes "Nights in Rodanthe," "Hollywoodland," "Must Love Dogs," "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Perfect Storm," "My Dog Skip," "Chaplin," "The Cotton Club" and "A Little Romance," to name only a portion.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Solid choice. If Costner signs on that would be great. And as much as I love Viggo please no more Zod.

Ditto, a milf indeed Chopsaki.

I am extremely curious as to when in Clark's life does this film pick-up, origin, teens or as Superman already. And is it going to play off of any of the previous ones as I thought it may.

I do not buy Dianne Lane as Henry Caville's Mom... unless this will be done in flashbacks

jfdavis 3/3/2011 6:15:15 AM

@madmanic999 Henry Caville is 27. Diane Lane is 46. It's not unheard of for a 19 year old to be a mother in small town Kansas. Besides, Clark was adopted...

tiredjay 3/3/2011 6:31:41 AM

jfdavis has a point, plus I sort of like the younger/hipper more modern Ma Kent, like from Lois & Clark and Smallville, over the elderly farm wife.

Batmite 3/3/2011 7:11:43 AM

Ugh.  I can't stand facing the fact that Superman's mom could be someone close to my age!  I used to identify with the heroes, not the parents!

monkeyfoot 3/3/2011 7:19:19 AM

Great choice, especially if Costner is Pa.

I was trying to guess who it was before clicking on the article and Diane Lane wasnt even on my radar. I like this choice, she should do great. And yeah, Superman has now a Super hot mom.
