Supernatural: The French Mistake

This show has the best episode titles ever

I wasn’t sure if I liked this week’s Supernatural because I hated this week’s Smallville so much, but I loved it. At least there is one show on the CW that isn’t written by twelve year olds for nine year olds. Once again Supernatural proved they, unlike the aforementioned Superman-coming-of-age crap saga, can vacillate between effortlessly between drama, horror, adventure and comedy.

“The French Mistake” was a fun episode, but there were some nice human moments mixed in. While the obvious highlights would probably be the good-natured bashing of the Padalecki and Ackle’s egos it was interesting and heartwarming to see Sam would trade his money and fame and would still risk Hell again if it meant staying in that universe would mean Sam and Dean were no longer brothers.

Supernatural is still one of the smartest genre shows to ever hit the small screen. Oh, and one other thing, I may not have effectively conveyed; Smallville sucks.

Alas poor Misha, we hardly knew ya.  Compulsive tweeting aside.  LOL

What was the point of this review? You gave no details about the actual episode, but at every chance talked about your hatred for Smallville.

Yeah Supernatural is an awesome show and with Fringe are the 2 best genre shows on TV, hands down, but why even go on a Smallville tirade? Did I mention this review sucks?

This episode was stupid.  There were a couple nice brotherly moments, and I appreciate a good tongue-in-cheek self-referential bashing as much as anyone, but they just over-played the silly in this one.  And WTF was the point of casting Brian Doyle Murray?  Does he just need to make sure that he racks in as many last minute performances before death to show he has more work ethic than little brother Bill?

Very little happened in this episode to move the plot forward, so it felt more like filler than "a lighter hearted moment of monster hunting."  Perhaps if I paid more attention to Hollywood gossip and blogs I would have gotten more of the gags - I just couldn't tell how much of the episode jokes were based in reality and how many were just stereotypical pokes at "the talent."

kara, Misha was funny. Great ep.

ponyboy, here's the point. This particular review is supposed to be 100 words. I did 100 words on why it was good. I wrote more to compare a good show doing a comedic episode to a bad show doing a comedic episode. Smallville has gone from a pleasant hour now and then to absolutely unbearable.

We got a little more about the war in Heaven, but no, it didn't really move the A plot forward much.  It was a lot of fun, though.

I don't follow anything about the show, so I was surprised when they did the first meta episode w/ the Supernatural books and found out that there was erotic incestual fanfic.  Do J&J not get along?  Misha has a twitter account?

ponyboy76 2/28/2011 10:56:06 AM

Wait, so why does Supernatural which is a much better show get only 100 words but Smallville gets like 2 pages worth? Where is the justice?

Castiel is not a funny character so Misha rarely gets to do anything funny on the show.  He seemed to be enjoying himself this ep.

Ponyboy, last fall they cut all the TV reviews and mashed them all up into one article.  Twelve or so shows got maybe 2 lines each.  Apparently because TV reviews don't get as many hits as some of Mania's other articles.  The only 2 to survive the cut were Smallville and Walking Dead which apparently got a signifigantly higher number of hits.  Why is the Smallville review more popular when Supernatural is the better show?  I've got no idea.  Maybe Superman is a more popular character or Joe's negative reviews of Smallville are more fun for some people to read or something.

I miss the full length Supernatural reviews wherein Joe got to do some in depth analysis instead of just a brief plot synopsis.  The in depth analysis was a lot more fun and better at stimulating conversation.

BTW, you can thank me that we have any TV reviews back at all.  Jarrod asked me on Facebook what I wanted for my birthday (late December) and I told him I wanted the TV reviews back.  And here they are.  LOL  No, he was probably just tired of all the regulars b*tching at him about it.  But I'll take the credit anyway.  LOL

Jakester, I think there is erotic homosexual or incestuous fanfic about every show on the air.  I've read some for Farscape and Buffy.  Some of it is pretty graphic too.  And some of it is downright hilarious.

But that's NOT the kind of thing that Dean would be able to laugh off.  He would be extremely offended by anything like  that.  He could face demons and monsters of all verieties but a little Supernatural slash fiction would completely wierd him out.

Misha ,Eric Kripke, Robert Singer, Lou Bollo are killed by an angel hitman! It was surprising and unexpected. Castiel is stronger and coming more into his own as a powerful character. The war in heaven is becoming interesting when the Winchesters get pulled into it. Now I'm looking forward to Castiel's new female ally - a savy angel. I hope the Mother of All turns out to be Gaia. She would definitely not care for Raphael's plan to destroy the planet.

I thought this episode wasn't done as well as it could've been. The episodes where they dealt with the novelization of their lives (very similar concept) where a lot better. Much, much more cleverly executed.

I actualy enjoyed Smallville more than Supernatural this week. That rarelly happens.
