Supernatural: A Little Slice of Kevin Review

Winchesters are once again hot on the trail

By TIm Janson     November 16, 2012

We now return you to your regularly scheduled storyline…after the last few weeks of Benny and Garth, the Winchesters are once again hot on the trail of the Prophet Kevin Tran.  A series of disappearances accompanied by short disasters leads the brothers to investigate the situation.  Kevin and his mom have been on the run for weeks but an ill-fated deal with a witch leads to Kevin being caught by Crowley.  While Kevin is hauled away by the King of Hell is mom is left to die at the hands of a demon.  But Mrs. Tran proves her resourcefulness, capturing the demon and contacting Sam and Dean.

But before they can meet up with her, the boys have an even bigger reunion.  Miraculously Castiel shows up on the boys’ doorstep with little in the way of explanation on how he escaped from Purgatory.  Still not fully recovered in terms of his powers Cas joins the brothers in hunting down Crowley.  Crowley has abducted all of the future Prophets and is holding them hostage so they are in his grasp if he decides to kill Kevin.  We finally get to see how Dean escaped Purgatory through a portal yet his memory proves to be faulty until Cas reveals what actually happened.

Well this episode certainly steamed along at a breakneck pace.  Lauren Tom as Mrs. Tran has become a favorite character bringing a mother’s tough protective nature along with a dose of wacky humor every time she is on screen.  Crowley’s tried twice to kill her without luck.  Does she have a guardian angel?

We knew it was going to happen at some point but it’s great to have Castiel back.  The chemistry between he and the Winchesters, especially Dean, has always been great.  Cas stole the show during his confrontation with Crowley, seemingly contradicting his claim that he was not back to full power.  Crowley looked like he was ready to drop a load in his pants!  I’m anxious to see what this new power structure in Heaven is all about and how it will relate to Cas and the Winchesters.

I do wish the writers would pay a bit more attention to the loose ends, however.  What happened with all of the other Prophets who were abducted?  Did Cas erase their memories of the ordeal?  I’m still waiting to find out what Sam did with Mjolnir.

I can't wait to see Cass' "bad cop" on the next episode.

As much as I love Supernatural, I think it's about time that the writers/producers start to bring the series to a close. This season  should end with the WInchesters and Cass finally kicking Crowley and all the demons back to hell and closing the gates, and getting a face-to-face with God before riding off into the sunset to lead normal lives.

That probably should have happened with Season 5, Moz, but with the exception of Season 6's premier, I think it's still just as good as it ever was.  If I thought it was starting to go the way that Smallville season 8 did, I would totally agree with you, but I think the stories are still solid.  I've heard this current track they're on will take them to Season 10...hopefully they don't lose it along the way.

When I saw that Mrs. Tran had that demon trussed up in the trunk of her car, I realize that's she's one of the most awesome characters they've ever had on this show.

Interesting mention of Chuck, though none of the characters noted that Chuck's role as prophet was completely different that Kevin's.  I can't help but wonder if that difference is going to play a role in the future, given that one of the plot points of this episode was the premise that any of the would-be prophets would simply step into Kevin's role, like changing out one cog with another.

The implication at the end of Season Five was that OLD SPOILERS! Chuck was God, but someone on another site wondered if Chuck might have been Metatron.  It's an interesting theory, and would go some way to explaining that postscript on the tablet got discussed.
