Last week’s episode ended with a shocking decision from Dean that appeared to be game changing for the show. Those final moments of that episode were actually exciting and moving but we have to remember how many times these brothers have split up and it ended up being virtually meaningless. A few times a season it seems like one of the brothers decides that he knows what’s best to do to solve a given problem so he takes off on his own. Sometimes the duo splits up for a few episodes and other times they don’t even stay apart for one. In this case, Dean left and stopped by to say goodbye to an old flame and Sam caught up to him. What a let down. Sure, Dean would still continue with his plan but Sam and Cass won’t let him escape.
This week’s episode kicked off with a humorous scene with Zachariah commiserating with a human at a bar. The two of them had something in common; they both apparently lost their jobs. When Zachariah got rehired, things really took a turn for the worse for his new drinking buddy. The angels had developed a new plan that threw a real monkey wrench into what Sam, Dean, and Bobby had come to believe about how the end of the world would happen. There was some marketing push that hinted at someone from the past would make a return visit to the show for this episode. Honestly, that return visitor was disappointing but he worked in the angel’s new plan.
There was tons of action in this episode with one of those scenes being a game changer on a minor level. For the most part, it was all quite exciting and it was fun to see Cass being a bad ass again. He’s turning into “Mr. Quote” man. Last week it was a liquor store and this week, when Sam asks what happened to Dean after seeing him beat up Cass simply replies “me”. Cass is sort of like Mr. Spock from Star Trek in a lot of ways. Most of the time he comes off emotionless but when the emotions do bobble to the surface somebody gets hurt. Cass cares about Sam and Dean and when he saw Dean attempting to just turn himself over to the angel’s he got mad and handed out a beating to Dean. It was a great scene because Dean had begun to take the sacrifices of those around him for granted which was making his decision to go to Michael easy. When he took a beating from Cass and he was forced to listen to what Bobby and Sam had to say, he at least had to reconsider the situation before just giving up. Honestly it would have been cool to see what would have happened if he had made the ultimate sacrifice, but the season’s not over yet. He’s died before and come back to life.
While absolutely nothing came of Dean’s plan from last week at least the bigger story does appear to be moving forward. There are only four episodes left in this season, so final moves need to be made soon if this story is to end this season. It’s possible that the producers have decided to drag the story out into season six but that would be a mistake. It’s time for this one to end. It’s already been going two seasons, that’s long enough. The big question is if this story does end this year: where can the brothers go for season six? This installment wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped it would be but there are some good twists and turns and there’s a death at the end of a really cool character so overall it was an entertaining installment of Supernatural.
This episode rocked so hard I can't even explain. Cass beating down Dean, Dean changing his mind at the last second cause his loyalty will always be with Sam. The brother was a decent addition. He certainly has the Winchester attitude as Sam pointed out. I really like Sam's 180 he's done this season. He's turning out to be my favorite of the two. He never gives up...Even if he has consumed demon blood and is Satan's vessel, he'll prove to do the right thing. In my opinion Sam has grown the most character wise.
