For me, two “meta” comedy episodes back to back is a little overkill for such a dark series. The main story is that Sam and Dean are expected to give themselves up as hosts for the devil and an angel as part of a battle that could inevitably mean the end of the world. This is really dark stuff and it has been a while since the series felt the true weight of the story. There was a humor based Paris Hilton episode, a creepy kid story (that does actually have some importance to the main story), and two additional back to back comedy installments. Sure, the writers smartly find a way to write in some plot points in at least two of these episodes that offer up some layers to the main story but overall these stand alone stories. The fact that these are stand alone stories bothers me less than the fact that the series has deviated so far tonally from the main story. A break in the action is fine and last week’s episode was my favorite of the season, but it’s time to get back to the real story.
With my complaints noted, this episode should have still been a fantastic set up for a really funny story. Sam and Dean get detoured from hunting to a Supernatural fan convention. When they show up there are tons of people dressed like various characters from previous episodes and many guys dressed like Sam and Dean. Sam and Dean’s reaction to the event is mildly amusing but overall the humor aspect of this episode is just a little disappointing. There are two main fans dressed like Sam and Dean and seeing them relive some character elements of the two characters from the books was very mildly amusing, but nowhere near as clever as it should have been. The writers of this show can make these types of stories humorous because they’ve done it time and time again within the seasons of Supernatural. I couldn’t help but think back to the Ghost Hunters spoof episodes. Even some of the segments from last week’s episode come to mind. Sadly, this episode just isn’t very funny.
Sam and Dean spend a lot of time ticked off about getting detoured to this event but they never turn and leave. Of course, they stick around long enough for the real ghosts to finally appear. Once this part of the story begins, there are some creepy visuals, a scalped child in particular, but the story is a fairly basic one in the world of Supernatural. Dean does get some good scenes with the fan boy dressed like him discussing the Sam and Dean characters and individual perspectives of the characters. Dean only sees the negative but his fan shows him that things could be worse, or at least more bland and boring. There’s a love triangle between Beck, the superfan who got to know Chuck in a previous episode, Chuck, the writer of the Supernatural books, and Sam. Of course, Sam has no desire to be part of the triangle and that story could not have been wrapped up in a more paint by numbers way. These sorts of traditional nighttime drama story elements just don’t belong in Supernatural. There can certainly be romance but it should come in edgier ways due to the life the two brothers live and it has in previous seasons.
So, the ghost story was a fairly predictable one and the “meta” humor just didn’t work this week overall. There were a few good scenes and some nice visuals though. Also, there were a few funny answers in Chucks fan Q&A, even in the closing credits of the episode. I’m fine with a story of the week as long as it’s a good one. This isn’t an utter failure of an episode but it is utterly forgettable within the season.
You are crazy. That episode was funny. Supernatural is usually always dark except for a few lighter episodes (if you can call "light", having to stop some homicidal kid ghosts). I think they have a few more this season because well, in the grand scheme of things there isn't much to smile about. Its the freaking apocalpyse. It wasn't the greatst episode but most of what they did worked for me. Especially the beginning with all the Impala's and the faux Sam and Deans running around. Of course some of it was predictable but doesn't mean it wasn't quality. The writers who came up with the whole Supernatural book plotline are genius. It works really well within the context of the show and even can give the actual characters insight to things they wouldn't have known, like at the end with the Colt. The dude who plays the prophet is funny too. And special shout out to the chick because I remember her from Ginger Snaps.
