Supernatural: The Song Remains the Same Review

Too Much Time Travel Equals Bad Star Trek

I know the writers are trying to fill time and build suspense until the end of the season, but they need to learn from Star Trek what too much time travel can do to your franchise. Yes, the new Star Trek film was pretty great but what do you think will happen if the next film were to include time travel? It would probably be a bad decision based on the franchises’ track record. Now Supernatural doesn’t have a bad track record because the last time Sam and Dean went back in time it was an entertaining episode. During that trip, the rule of destiny was established. The rule states that destiny can’t be changed or avoided. Things were set to go a certain way and not matter how hard Sam and Dean tried they couldn’t change what happened to their family.

With the rule of destiny in place within the Supernatural universe, why does an Angel think she can go back in time and stop Sam and Dean from being born? Ana the Angel’s first appearance in this episode is classic Supernatural and really funny stuff. Due to the protective branding that Castiel placed on Dean, she can’t find the brothers so she visits Dean in the only place she can find him, in his dreams. Dean is trying to have some personal time in his dream with an ironically costumed stripper when Ana appears to ruin his fun. It turns out that Ana now believes that Sam must be killed in order to stop the apocalypse. Of course Sam, Dean, and Castiel aren’t in support of her plan so she decides to go back in time and kill Sam and Dean’s parents to stop the brothers from ever being born. So, if we are to believe that there is no stopping the brothers’ mother from dying at the hands of the yellow eyed demon isn’t it just as inevitable that these brothers will be born? That answer comes in a fairly creative way by the end of the episode but it seems as though the angels would know these answers from the beginning. With the knowledge of destiny being unavoidable, why would Ana even consider this plan?

On the upside this episode features an intense appearance by Michael, the Angel that plans to use Dean as a host. Back to the whole destiny thing, both Lucifer and Michael believe unequivocally that the brothers will agree to become meat suits for these two brothers. This belief further questions the whole plot of this episode. Michael is quite convincing when chatting with Dean though. Michael tries to portray himself as the good brother but what he does to Sam and Dean’s parents again insures that everyone will meet their destinies. There are a few humorous moments in the episode and a couple of exciting moments too but overall, this episode doesn’t feel very consistent within the universe that has been set up by the series. Also, Ana stopped being interesting a while back so seeing her again wasn’t a thrill a minute. One of those exciting moments does involve her being confronted by Michael though.

The Song Remains the Same had some good moments in it but the episode overall comes off a bit on the bland side. Not every episode can knock it out of the park, but watching the overall game is still a good time.

Honestly, I don't think there is a 'rule of destiny'. The angels don't know everything, but they like people to think that they do.

I think this episode tied up some of the loose ends of Dean's previous trip to the past. We got to see a little bit more of Papa Winchester's mindset as a naive youngster, and what it would take for him to bring children into the life of a hunter. This is an episode where the boys get to reconcile any anger they had towards their parents that they may have been harboring by understanding that their parents were only trying to do what they felt was the right thing to do.

It also tied up the Ana storyline, and we finally got introduced to Micheal without it having to be a confrontation over possession of Dean's body. This episode progressed the characters and storyline a little bit, so calling it a filler episode was just wrong. Last week was a filler episode, not this week.

Rating B plus.

"I do not understand that referene!!!"

Even with all seriousness I love how they get such great jokes in at the expense of Cas.

I figured they would wipe the memories of Ma and Pa Winchester.  Great episode none the less.  And was so estatic that Michael finally made his appearance.  I love how he verbally went toe to toe with Dean but I agree with you DaFroce.

He and Lucifer may think it is all written and destiny but my guess is God will intervene when it all comes to a head to prove that Humans do have and deserve free will. Thus ending the heavenly brothers spat.

The show can't hit every episode out of the park but it was still pretty good. Thats the problem with American TV story arcs have to stretch out over a full season. But supernatural still has a solid formula that works well. I am really curious to see whole will be God's meat suit.

I did not care for the bad Anna. The Angels are dicks this is known, it was nice to have another  one  on the brothers side. Plus it did not fit her character, they saved her, she knows their good....

Still a solid B.

I wasn't a fan of the Bad Anna, either I liked her when she was on their side, but it goes to show you how hopeless Sam, Dean, and Cas's cause seems to be. No one thinks that they can stop what's coming. I like the time travel and its not like they have used it that much. 2 episodes?  Another solid B episode.

This show is 110 time better then Smallville. I think all will agree to that. Why do they keep going back and forth from hunting random demons and such and getting back to the main story. I know its probably just to stretch things out for the season, but its killing me. I want to see the lucifer and michael as sam and dean go at it. It was cool that Dean finally got some face time with michael. Good episode, can't wait for more.

Jensen Ackles for Captain America!!!

I am sick to death of time travel stories...its has to be the most over used storylines in genre.  That being said, getting past of my dislike of time travel I enjoyed the episode.   I like the face time Dean had with Michael.
