What They Say
Yamato has been in love with Suzuka since the first time he laid eyes on her. But when his old friend Honoka surprises him with a kiss, he can't seem to take his mind off of her! Will hottie Honoka end up luring Yamato away from Suzuka?

The Review
Ever since he laid eyes on Suzuka, Yamato has been madly in love with the high jumping tsundere. Her grace and talent is equally matched by her beauty, but Yamato has learned that this rising star does not feel the same way about him. Or at the very least, she can not admit that she feels that way. And without any inspiration Yamato's track future has hit a wall. He already failed to qualify for Nationals (called Inter High). His track season is basically over for the year. Now he has to play cheerleader for the very girl he is crushing on so hard! If only he could get his mind off Suzuka and the image of her leaping out of his reach.

Well Yamato is in luck. When he thought he couldn't get Suzuka out of his head, a new familiar face took her place. Honoka-chan has always been a comforting friend, and now she is at Yamato's side full-time.

As a manga, Suzuka has never been original or inspirational. I can list a number of titles Seo has derived content from. But volume five finally has Suzuka stand on its own among all other shounen romances. Because in this volume, not only does Seo-sensei have Yamato make a decision but he has the kid pick the nicer of the two girls. This is unprecedented in the world of manga. Guys are supposed to brood over their first love until those girls finally "figure out" how good they had it. In Suzuka, Yamato figures that himself and moves on. Sure he was seduced into this situation. No doubt he under normal circumstances Yamato would still be following Suzuka like a dog around Hiroshima if Honoka hadn't acted first. But the point here is that now Yamato has a reason to be a loser... If he still has feelings for Suzuka after snagging this beauty, he deserves Suzuka's full wrath!

So Suzuka is finally readable. I still would not recommend this title. This still the biggest rip off in manga. No color plates and the translation notes were just average despite its ridiculous $13.99 price tag. I got two sets of nips in this book for an additional $4... Nope. I'd have a hard time paying $10.99 for this. $13.99 puts it up in Tampenshu, Old Boy and Berserk territory and this manga does no get anywhere near those books; not its content or its quality.
