Swan(wick) Song
By: Chris WyattDate: Wednesday, March 13, 2002
When recently asked to name the best science fiction novelists working today, Samuel Delany, one of the fathers of modern SF literature, referred to fellow Philadelphian Michael Swanwick as "an intriguing and compelling artist...among the very best." Delany isn't the only genre fiction insider to sing Swanwick's praises. Swanwick was awarded the Hugo, genre publishing's greatest honor, back-to-back in 1999 and 2000 for his short fiction (the stories were respectively entitled "The Very Pulse of the Machine" and "Scherzo with Tyrannosaur").
While Swanwick is primarily known for his short fiction, his novels have also received their fair share of accolades as well, as evidenced by the Nebula award granted to 1991's STATIONS OF THE TIDE.
