Nova Prime Cast for Guardians of the Galaxy

John C. Reilly Officially joins the Cast

The Wrap has officially announced that John C. Reilly will join the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy. Reilly will play Rhomann Dey aka Nova Prime, a member of the Nova Corp. We had heard for some time that Reilly would be joining the cast. It became the question of who he would play. The thought of Reilly (Wreck-It Ralph) in a Nova Corp uniform just doesn’t sit right with me. This still looks like Marvel’s biggest gamble yet. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a little over 13 months away.
The Brief Synopsis: Guardians of the Galaxy centers on Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Pratt), a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone want.

Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled for August 1st, 2014.
Who is Rhomann Dey? According to "Rhomann Dey was the leader of the Nova Corps of Xandar and one of its few survivors. When the Warlord Zorr attacked Xandar, he devastated it and killed many Xandarians including Dey's wife and child. Dey hunted Zorr and battled him.[1]
However, Zorr was too powerful for Dey and mortally wounded him. Dey flew to Earth ahead of Zorr and chose randomly Richard Rider as the new Nova transferring his power to him. Dey linked minds with Rider and explained to him the new powers he has received as well as the threat of Zorr on his planet.[1]
At first, Rider thought the encounter was a dream, but soon discovered his powers and accepted his role as Nova. While out testing them for the first time he ran into Zorr who was on a rampage in New York City. Nova decided to fulfill the one who gave him his powers dying wish and defeat Zorr. During the battle, Zorr was teleported away by Dey himself. Dey killed Zorr before he himself died, ready to join his family and friends in the afterlife".

Never even heard of Guardians of the Galaxy until they announced the movie.  I love John C. Reilly, but even without any knowledge of the character or the story or anything other than what little I've gathered from this site and some teasers...I dunno.  I just don't see it.  Am I wrong?

Boats and hoes!

John C. Riley is a consummate performer and a very versatile actor. If he needs to tone up and slim down for a role, he'll do it.

Like I said, I'm clueless when it comes to GotG.  If you guys who have more knowledge than I say that Reilly can pull it off then I'm in no position to argue.  Dude's one of my favorite actors, so I look forward to it.

wow this is getting more interesting by the min.

Hard to see Reilly playing it, but only because he's mostly known for comedies.  But I guess we'll see how he does in a more serious role.

before he rose to popularity in recent years all he did was act in serious roles. i can totally see this.

I CANNOT see John C. Reilly as an action hero.  At all.  Seriously.  Sarah Silverman should be Wonder Woman before this guy gets to be a superhero.  Maybe I've just been too tainted by seeing him in all those slap-dick comedy roles like Step-Brothers and Talladega Nights.  Who knows?  I'll give it a chance, I guess.

Regardless of this casting news, I'm still not that interested in Guardians of the Galaxy.  I've never liked nor cared about the comic, and I'm a diehard Marvel fan from the 80s.  I really think Marvel is overreaching on this one.

I think this means the movie will more comedic rather than John C Reilly taking a serious turn. Still curious, who knows.

I've never read this comic, but the premise sure sounds A LOT like Green Lantern... Are the "Guardians" Marvel's version of the Lantern Corps, or something?

with rocket raccoon and groot you have to accept there will be some humor... now, is it gonna be slapstick (stupid) humor that will ruin this franchise? or will it be the kind of humor that movies like star wars and lethal weapon were able to mingle between intense action? Or will they fail to make the transition and not really find an identity for this flick? In other words, the typical sci fi failing of making things over silly and then task the viewer with accepting hard core action sequences and drama later on.

Good question.
