Back during the glory days of the Sony Playstation, a little game called SYPHON FILTER was released. It made a small impact on gaming in general, but was mainly overlooked because another game, METAL GEAR SOLID, was released around the same time. Now, years later, the third installment of SYPHON FILTER is released on the dying Playstation.
SYPHON FILTER 3 feels so much like the first game that it's a wonder that this game can actually be called a sequel; it feels more like an add-on pack. Once again, you are cast in the role of Gabe Logan, who has to square off against his former spy organization, simply called the Agency. Yet, the storyline is not so straightforward. Each mission begins with Gabe retelling a story during a testimony to a government panel, and then the game goes into a flashback sequence, where you play out the mission.
The graphic engine doesn't seem to have been touched, nor does the gameplay engine. As always, the game is played from a third-person perspective, as the first-person view is only used for precise aiming with weapons, such as a sniper rifle. If you've played either of the previous SYPHON FILTER games, then the missions won't be hard to get into: you have a list of objectives, and you have to complete all of the objectives to complete the mission. Most objectives consist of getting to a certain spot with a certain item, and not letting yourself get killed before you get there.
Unlike METAL GEAR SOLID, where your main weapon is stealth, SYPHON FILTER 3 relies on combat. Aiming can be quite difficult at times, but thankfully there is an auto-lock system built into the game. Once you see the enemy, just press R1 to lock onto him. This makes Gabe fire at him, instead of firing five feet beside him and getting yourself killed. Without this system, the game would be almost impossible.
One thing I don't understand is why SYPHON FILTER 3 was designed as a Playstation game, and not a Playstation 2 game. The Playstation is aging, and not many people are going to buy an average Playstation game that plays exactly like its predecessors when they can buy METAL GEAR SOLID 2.
SYPHON FILTER 3 is a pretty good game, and is almost as good as the first game. Unfortunately, the first game came out years ago, and SYPHON FILTER 3 doesn't really stack up to newer games like METAL GEAR SOLID 2 or HALO. I recommend this game only for fans of the series, or for someone who is looking to get a little more out of their Playstation system.
