Even before the release of the first film and its stunning success, free comics were a part of THE MATRIX. Before the release of the first MATRIX movie back in 1999, former Marvel Comics editor Spencer Lamm sought out some of the industry's top writers and artists, asking them if they wanted to create new stories set in the universe that writers/directors Andy and Larry Wachowski had just created. Even without having a finished film to judge the material on, a number of comic book pros signed up and created the first wave of MATRIX comics, which were then released online at the film's official website. Later, a free promotional comic book was printed and distributed to audience members who caught one of the first showings of the film.

The success of the first film and the announcement of two more sequels meant that Lamm was able to continue to have a hand in shaping more MATRIX comic stories. Over the course of the past four years, new stories have appeared at at the MATRIX website featuring a who's who of comic superstars: Neil Gaiman, Bill Sienkiewicz, Dave Gibbson, Paul Chadwick, Kilian Plunkett and many more have helped expand the universe of THE MATRIX. Now, in conjunction with the release of the third and final MATRIX film, a special hardcover release of THE MATRIX COMICS will arrive in bookstores. Featuring a dozen Matrix stories spread out over 160 pages, this is just the first volume of what promises to be more material that will keep MATRIX fans happy long after the movie is out of theaters.

The MATRIX website has a preview of the book's first 20 pages showing what you can expect. If you're not living near a bookstore you need to consider moving, but for now you can order THE MATRIX COMICS online.

This doesn't mean that you'll have to pay for new MATRIX comics. Lamm and the Wachowskis promise to keep the existing and forthcoming comic stories free and available for reading at the main MATRIX site. Currently, there are over two dozen stories and pin-up galleries just waiting for your eyeballs.
