Arrow: Salvation Review

A new vigilante has hit Starling City

By Tim Janson     March 30, 2013

A new vigilante has hit Starling City and he’s abducting people he thinks are guilty and is executing them live on the Internet for the entire city to see.  Oliver goes on a desperate run to save the latest abductee, a District Attorney, as Felicity attempts to track his location.  However the computer wiz fails and the DA is killed.  They discover that the killer is a man whose wife was killed by street thugs in thugs in the Glades and he’s targeting those he deems responsible such as the DA for not bringing the criminals to justice, and Roy Harper whom he uses as a surrogate for ll gang bangers in the Glades.

Laurel’s mother has convinced her and her Dad that Sarah may indeed have survived the shipwreck of Robert Queen’s yacht.  Laurel goes so far as to contacting a friend in China to try and confirm the identity in the photo that Dinah Lance believes is Sarah.  Malcolm Merlyn is getting closer to finding out who took out the contract on his life, leading to Moira Queen making a desperate decision to save her life.  Meanwhile on the Island, Oliver and Slade Wilson are in a standoff with Fyers and his men to make a deal to get off the island in exchange for Oliver returning the circuit board that controls the missile system that Fyers has obtained.  But Fyers has other plans, threating to murder Yao Fei’s daughter if Oliver doesn’t turn over the chip.

I liked everything in this week’s episode EXCEPT the main plotline involving the vigilante killer.  This was another lame, uninteresting villain that was simply a time waster.  Furthermore the fact that out of all of the low life criminals in the Glades the fact that the killer just happens to abduct a penny-ante punk like Roy Harper was pretentious to say the least.  Certainly a less hackneyed way could have been devised to somehow get Roy Harper more ingrained into the Green Arrow universe.

The one intriguing thing was the search for Sarah Lance.  There is certainly more than meets the eye with this plot thread.  This wasn’t just done for a two episode diversion.  Malcolm Merlyn made another appearance in his Dark Arrow garb and we can certainly look forward to a round two battle with Oliver soon.  Things are progressing on the island as Fyers always seems to be able to counter the moves made by Oliver and Wilson.

An uneven episode at best.  The main plot cast an unfavorable shadow over the rest of the events which were mostly enjoyable.

Yeah, the main plot wasn't too interesting but it was good enough to keep things moving. Could they have found a different way to get Roy going? Sure. But they chose this, and I'm fine with that. I give the episode an A.
