THE TERRIFYING NEWS
New Clip for Hemlock Grove. Netflix debuted a new clip from "Hemlock Grove at WonderCon, titled "The Monster Within,". From executive producer Eli Roth and based on Brian McGreevy's novel of the same name, "Hemlock Grove" is a riveting one-hour murder mystery that revolves around the residents of a former Pennsylvania steel town. When 17-year-old Brooke Bluebell is brutally murdered, any of Hemlock's peculiar inhabitants – or killer creatures – could be suspects. Through the investigation, the town's seamier side is exposed, revealing nothing is what it seems.
Dracula: Son of the Dragon. The most exciting new independent comic is not coming from Marvel, DC or even Image. Instead, two creators with works in print from nearly every publisher have decided to self-publish and are seeking fans help to do it. DRACULA: SON OF THE DRAGON is a new Kickstarter from two high-profile indie creators.
Created by writer Mark Sable (Two Face: Year One; Graveyard of Empires) and artist Salgood Sam (Therefore Repent, Sea of Red, Warren Ellis’ Ghost Rider 2099), Dracula: Son of the Dragon serves as a prequel to Bram Stoker’s Dragon. Part historical fiction, part horror fantasy, it chronicles the transformation of Vlad Dracula from Impaler to vampire Count.
In Dracula: son of the Dragon, Sable and Salgood mine vampirism as a way of extending life, an addictive drug and an ancient weapon of mass destruction, spreading a vicious plague. Just as Graveyard was known for extensive research and edgy political relevance, so is Dracula: “It may be set over 500 years in the past, but Son of the Dragon deals with a misguided war against Islam, with terror used as a weapon on both sides.” Sable compares it to 300 and From Hell in terms of historical fiction.

THE TERRIFYING REVIEWS!
Girls Against Boys (Anchor Bay) Blu-ray review
With a name like Girls Against Boys you might be expecting a somewhat tongue-in-cheek, over the top romp but that’s (unfortunately) not what we get. What we get instead is a decidedly downbeat, girl power/men are pigs revenge film that mostly fails to explain its motivations and fails to captivate the viewer. The usually enjoyable Danielle Panabaker (Piranha 3DD, The Ward) plays shy college student Shae, whose affair with a married man comes to an end when he breaks things off, attempting to patch up his relationship with his wife. Now, given the state of marriage in this country we should be applauding the man for making the attempt to keep his family together but no. Director Austin Chick uses this event instead to have Shae and a psycho friend go on a killing spree against men they feel have wronged them.
Depressed over the break up, Lu takes Shae out on the town where they meet several men in a club, after a lot of heavy drinking and provocative dancing, and go with them back to their apartment. One eventually walks Shae home but ends up forcing himself on her, sexually assaulting the young student. When Shae tells Lu what happened they decide to get their revenge. But this is no “I Spit on Your Grave” style of revenge film where the culprits are so despicable you’re only too happy to see them get their just desserts. Instead, most of the men killed here are not guilty of anything other than being born a man.
In order to track down the boy who raped Shae they arrive at the apartment of his friends to get his address, whereupon they shoot the two men who had no hand in or knowledge of the assault. But hey, all men deserve it right? Later they abduct the man who broke up with Shae but despite the pleas for his wife and daughter he gets shot anyway. Lu later seduces a cop at the police station and shoots him by sticking a gun where the sun doesn’t shine, pulling the trigger.
Shae, like all of us wonder what the hell is wrong with Lu. Did she have a traumatic childhood? She tells Shae she was raped by her father’s friends with his approval before she starts laughing and says she’s only kidding, she had a wonderful childhood. So basically the motivation simply is men suck so kill them. Brilliant. Hopefully no one will ever let Austin Chick direct another film…next time he might be going after puppies or bunny rabbits.
The Bay (Lionsgate) DVD review
While the Bay was marketed as a horror film it really isn’t. It’s an found footage thriller film about a ecological disaster film that befalls a small Maryland town on the Chesapeake Bay. The Bay opens with a collection of actual TV news reports from different areas of the country reporting on ecological disasters involving the mass deaths of fish or birds. The film attempts to tells fictional version of a potential real-life situation based upon facts.
Two marine biologist researchers discover extremely high levels of toxins in a part of the bay and make an even more terrifying discovery…fish are being attacked by a mutated parasite that literally eats them away from the inside. However the findings by the researchers are ignored by local authorities who do not want to cause a panic with the upcoming 4th of July festival which means big tourist dollars for the small town (insert your Jaws reset here). Even when the bodies of the researchers are found, the strange bits are (ironic Jaws moment again) are initially blamed on a shark attack.
The holiday festivities go on as planned yet soon nearly the entire town becomes sick. The people begin to breakout with enormous pustules all over their body and vomit blood as hospitals are overrun with patients. Much of the narrative is told through a young, local TV news intern named Donna who was covering the festival as her first assignment. The film also makes use of police dash cams, cell phone cameras, security monitors, etc… as it relates various side stories in the town such as a young couple travelling by boat to meet their parents at the festival and the chief doctor at the hospital who is trying to get help from the CDC.
The film was directed by Barry Levinson who has been a fixture in Hollywood for 40 years but who isn’t exactly known for directing thrillers and it shows. Levinson doesn’t seem to know which aspect of the film to concentrate on and as a result the many different side stories only serve to muck up the events. As much as I abhor found footage films most tend to stick with one plot or one group of characters. The scenes involving the CDC especially drag the film down as these “experts” come off as clueless, slow to respond, and ineffective. The science is also scattered as it blames everything from excessive chicken poop to nuclear waste dumped into the Chesapeake Bay as a way to explain the mutated parasites. Despite some glaring weaknesses the actual potential terror that the film suggests is truly terrifying. While the cast is mostly unknowns they are believable as average people in an extraordinary situation.
Bioshock Infinite Series 1 Action Figures (NECA)
Bioshock Infinite was just released this past week but is already being hailed as one of the best videogames of 2013. NECA is always at the forefront of producing action figures for niche films or videogames and has released the first two figures for Bioshock Infinite: Elizabeth and Boys of Silence.
The Boys of Silence are fearsome characters sealed behind enormous bronze masks and capable of detecting sound and movement with terrifying sensitivity. Over 20 points of articulation highlight this figure. Because of its design, which should be obvious by the pictures, the figure can be a bit top heavy but it doesn’t terribly detract from the ability to pose the figure, but mainly that’s because there’s not much movement to the lower legs to begin with. Great detailing in the brass buttons on his coat to the rivets on his helmet, right down to the shoelace eyelets on his boots. Definitely one of the more weird action figures I’ve seen.
Elizabeth bears a wonderful resemblance to her videogame image with her striking pale blue eyes. Like the Boys of Silence she features 20 points of articulation. Elizabeth’s coat and corset are made of molded plastic while her skirt is made of actual fabric material in dazzling royal blue. She isn’t quite as detailed in her paint job although her choker is very nice as is the large bow tie laces of her ankle high boots.
Two complaints…there are no accessories that come with the figures. I’m fine with that for the most part as useless accessories are just as bad as none. But with figures like these that are designed to be displayed, SHOULD come with a display base.
