Tenchi Muyo: Daughter of Darkness
By Sean Connolly
February 18, 2002
Release Date: March 31, 1998
"A Daughter of Darkness can only envy the light or succumb to it! On a hot summer day, a fetching young girl named Mayuka appears to Tenchi, calling him Daddy! Jealousy and envy follow as Ryoko and Ayeka battle for Tenchi's attention with an apparently new rival. Who could the mother be?!? Hiding in the background, Yuzuha, the Demoness of Darkness, is about to get her revenge against Yosho for a grudge held for over 700 years! She begins her plan by using Mayuka to steal Tenchi away to the Dimension of Darkness. So it begins again, Tenchi must fight to save his friends and Mayuka, daughter or not."
Wha? "A Daughter of Darkness can only envy the light or succumb to it!" What the heck? Nevermind, I don't even wanna know where they got that from. Anyways, watch out! Here comes my review of Tenchi the Movie 2: The Daughter of Darkness. By the way, does Pioneer know that "The Daughter of Darkness" is also the name of a porno? Didn't think so.
I'll start it off with the picture. Pioneer quality all the way ( read: superb ). Nothing more than I can say about that really. So, I'll go to the sound. Pioneer went ahead and put 4 different soundtrack on this disc ( albeit, 2 are useless to me ). 2 DD 5.1 tracks ( English and Japanese ) and 2 DD 2.0 tracks ( stereo ). Very nice indeed. The 5.1 tracks really help set the mood for the movie with great surround effects that help you get the feel of the household ( birds churping, stuff like that ).
The menu is pretty basic with music in each sub-menu. However, the big thing here is the Tenchi Encyclopedia. It has basic info on tons of stuff in the Tenchi universe with clips and drawings. Very nice indeed. The packaging...well, let's just say I'm glad they switched to the cases they are using now. I don't really mind the cardboard box with the jewel case inside, but I don't really *like* it either.
Now, the story, ah, the story. Well, I'm sure most everyone has seen this movie by now, so I'll just get to the jist of it. There is a being who dweels in the Darkness named Yuzuha. Due to an unfortunate incident involving her and Yosho in the past, she still pines over him while being very very mad at him at the same time ( some people just can't let go...) So, she decides to get back at Yosho, by trying to hurt Tenchi. So, she creates Mayuka and implants the picture of Tenchi as her father. So, Mayuka shows up on the scene and trys to fit in as part of the family, but of course, all heck breaks loose. Now, this sounds like it's a nice story right? Eh. You see, this movie can't decide which Tenchi Universe it's in. Most of everything in the movie has that OAV feel to it, except for some glaring facts.
One being Kiyone. Mainly if people think this is set in the Tenchi OAV universe, how do you explain her being there at all? Also, there is a scene near the end of the movie where Yosho and Ayeka talk about Tsunami and Tenchi's power. Now, not only does Yosho talk about Tsunami as if Ayeka has no knowledge of Tsunami, Ayeka goes on to say " Grandfather " and " My brother's tree " to his face! Now if this is set in the OAV universe, way the heck would she call him Grandfather in the first place ( she never does after OAV 5 ) and why would she say " My brother's tree " if he's right there ( note, this is in the sub as well )?! I must also note that Yosho's tree does not equal Tsunami, SO IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYWAYS! Did Yosho forget he had a tree as well? Some other things of note, Tenchi can now whip out his "Light Hawk Sword" ( sorry, I thought it was 'Light Hawk Wings' ) at will. Also, it seems people can just whip out swords at any given time. We know Ryoko can do it, it's written so Mayuka can do it, but Yosho? No, I don't think so. Geez, it's things like this that makes the movie look VERY poorly-written. The writer you ask? Naoko Hasegawa, who also co-wrote the 1st OAV series. Did she just forget all these things? I also must point out, Hasegawa has done manga based off Tenchi but changed it a bit to her liking. Even so, there's no excuse for this poor of writing.
These faults aside, Tenchi The Movie 2 is a good movie in itself and it's good to have any Tenchi rather than any no Tenchi at all, even if it is poorly written. There are some touching moments as well as some shocking ones. As least you know, after this movie, Tenchi does have some guts in him after all. I realize I'm being a little hard on this series, but I hole Tenchi Muyo! in higher regard than most anime. If you're a Tenchi fan, you've watched this. If you're not, and new to the series, try it out and see what you think.
