TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: Brothers of Nablus

Can't the Terminators Just Get Along?

By Stephen Lackey November 05, 2008

Cameron (Summer Glau) Wants Her Leather Jacket Back this Week on "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Brothers of Nablus"(2008).

It appears that the Terminators can’t all get along or at least they seem to be working outside the parameters of their missions. An Ellison Terminator is sent back to now by SkyNet to replace Ellison but Cromartie stops that by ripping the Ellison-bot’s guts out. On a side note, if Terminator’s can waste each other so easily, why do these fights go on so long? It’s easy to say “well, one Terminator is more advanced than another” but the truth is that the softness of the Terminators is determined by the writing needs not by continuity.

This week’s story doesn’t really progress the overall story arc at all - it’s focused on one event - a robbery. The Connor house gets robbed and Sarah, Cameron, and Derek set out to find the thieves before their ID’s get found by the police. Meanwhile, Cromartie is getting closer to the Connor’s without the help of Ellison even though he predicts that Ellison will lead him to his goal. Cameron’s criminal friend makes a reappearance to help Cromartie track down the Connor’s leading to a really cool looking scene where at a minimum her ribs should have been broken but hey this is TV.

This episode was more about character development than expanding the story. John makes a mistake that set everything in motion this week in an attempt to have some sort of semblance of a life. At the same time, Cameron has decided not to play it neutral anymore. Anyone who gets in the way of her mission must die no matter the level of threat. The problem is that Sarah doesn’t stop Cameron. In fact Sarah almost seems to fear her a bit. Could Sarah just be letting Cameron do the work that she can’t do?

By the end of the episode, not much had changed for any of the main characters other than the fact that Riley knows that a really dangerous man is after John. Riley seems to be more concerned about being a bad ass than being curious about who the man is. In reality Riley should have made a quick exodus but not here. There’s a lot this week that steps a bit too far outside of reality. That definitely sounds odd considering that this show is about robots and A.I. taking over the world and soldiers traveling through time. One of the best scenes in the episode came between Ellison and Weaver when she came to get him out of prison. No, Shirley Manson isn’t a good actress by any stretch of the imagination, but she seems to be settling into this role and her look is without a doubt perfect for the part. The very worst part of the series and this episode in particular, is Derek’s side story. This new love interest is completely boring and will hopefully get used as a tool for deepening Derek later on when she gets killed.

CHANGE HAS COME!!

Just had to get that out of the way. Now, I agree that the side story with Derek is boring but we saw in her first appearance that hse is doing some sort of surveillance on the Connors and Cameron so she isn`t just there on a vacation. I still think that she is working for a faction of the resistance that also wants John Connor dead to forward their own agenda. I guess we will see.

On a side note, if Terminator’s can waste each other so easily, why do these fights go on so long?

It was easy because the Ellison-terminator was attacked from behind with no idea there was another terminator around and therefore unguarded. Also Cromartie wouyld know the exact spot and force necassary for the attack..

...leading to a really cool looking scene where at a minimum her ribs should have been broken but hey this is TV.

You have no idea the state of her ribs from the end of that scene as the really only showed her sittiing on the ground as he sped away. At the very least she would be in shock. But hey this your review.

At last we agree on something. I like Dereks character, but this side story in uninteresting and unneeded(at least until I see where it leads, it could still redeem itself).

Finally, Summer gets to be a Terminator again, instead of a cute quirky girl robot. Hmmmm so this is what happened to Vicki from "Small Wonder"

Overall, I thought this was a pretty good episode. I agree, though, that there is a little inconsistency regarding the vulnerability of terminators. It also makes some sense that part of their durability in fights stems from each terminator's knowledge of a coming attack. However, I find it hard to believe that my laptop knows when a Wifi hub is nearby, but robots from the future lack similar functionality to detect each other's presence when they are out of sight of each other.

"thank you for your time" I love Cromartie and his fake smiles and his attemps at being human. Garret plays his Terminator real good.

This show just rocks and I can't get enough of it. I am so siked for the showdown next week we'll see who eats it in the end.

"And although it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready, to see a black President"......Tupac back in the day.

On 11/4/08, we proved him wrong.

On this episode. I don't like how Sarah Connor acts sometimes, I liked her better in Terminator 2. Back then everything was about her son and she didn't care who got killed cause she already knew everyone was gonna die once the attack came. In this episode she's back to caring again. A couple of episodes back, when Penny from Lost was dying and Cromartie was going after John, she stopped the van to help her out instead of letting her die so she could get to the guy who is going to lead the human race in the future. In this episode, Cameron does the right thing by wasting the guys cause they knew where they live but Sarah let's the young guy live. Don't see why she cares about people that are gonna die anyway, her top priority should be keeping her son safe.

Good episode though.

That'd be 'psyched,' TechCom.

This is one of the few shows that I'm really enjoying this season (Supernatural, True Blood, and Dexter are the others). It has its problems, but overall is quite entertaining. My big issue is with the number of people and terminators coming back in time. It's just too convenient. But I'm still interested to see what Weaver's deal is, and what Kat is really up to.

Loved the moment where Cameron unloads into them. It's about time she unleashes the Terminator inside her and that's what the writers need to get back to.

And then, right after...Sarah Connor reverts back to her soft side in making what I deem to be a poor decision in letting the other get away.

So highlight and low point right afterwards.

But at least the writers follow up that Garrett's Terminator doesn't allow that low point to last very long. Ending the show with his sinister-looking smile at assurance that he will let him go was classic.

The series seems to be getting better since being picked up for a full season and like it was said above, I can't wait to see in the gun battle ahead. Side story being boring or not, Derek better not be getting the axe. He needs to be there to make Connor into a man because Sarah is doing a piss poor job at it with her motherly/smotherly syndrome. Which is why the scene where Derek calls Sarah out on the whole "I'm still waiting for Connor to show up!" is a highlight as well for me.

Terminator and Dexter, two series I'm enjoying quite a bit this season.

I still think Cameron is about to snap again soon. I said this last review but I think by the time I responded, the thread was already dead so I will just say it again here. During the first episode of this season when she is pleading for her life, it was a direct homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey when HAL 9000 is pleading for his life when the character of David is about to disconnect him. We all know HAL 9000 lost it even though he was pleading for his life which had some of the exact lines that Cameron used. Was this the writer's way of trying to say that Cameron still has a hidden agenda? We shall see. But overall, I liked this episode but I don't care for the quick dispatches of Terminators. The quicker you take them out, the more it takes away the fear of them if you see them in a scene. Kind of like the Aliens franchise...

I'm interested to see why Cromartie is so set on keeping Ellison alive even if it goes against SkyNet's plans. Seems odd, but maybe Cromartie just believes Ellison will lead him to John.

Those guys who broke into the Connor House don't strike me as smart enough to pull off that kind of a job. Something tells me they had help, maybe from Jesse (or whatever girl from the future's name is). We already know from the pictures she shoved under her bed that she's be spying on them. And they did use her guy unload some of the diamonds. One question I had was why did the crooks run Conner's credit card at the bowling ally? It appeared as though they were there after hours and had employee-like access to the place. Why would they need to spend any money there? Much less, who uses a credit card at an arcade? Do arcades have credit card machines now? I haven't been to one in several years, so I don't know.

One other side note, we all know that John is supposed to led the fight against the machines in the future, right? Well, I don't recall ever seeing anything in any of the movies or this series that suggests we actually "winning" the war. Now, if he leads us to victory in the future, I'd think he's really important, but if all he does is fight a never-ending battle against the machines, what's really the point? I could be wrong, but I was just thinking about this while I watch the episode.

(how awesome are the bold and italic options?)

This is what made this ep great to me. Cameron finally reminded us (seemingly just remembering herself) of exactly what she is. A machine. Sarah's reaction seemed completely appropriate to me as well. She has been living with Cameron and there was a feeling of familiarity developing due to Camerons quirky programming. When she sees these occasional flashes of Cameron's true nature, it SHOULD inspire a bit of fear and apprehension.

The thing that I love about shows like BSG, TSCC, Lost and Heros (and to a far lesser extent, Smallville), is that these are very realistic characters in a very unrealistic environment. They are imperfect, sometimes irrational people who often make poor decisions. Compared to some of the Star Trek series that I used to call 'The Brady Bunch in Space', there is a depth to these characters that fans should realy start appreciating if they don't already. The moment they start doing everything they are 'supposed to' do, and stop doing things that don't make sense, the characters will cease to be compelling and the shows will stop being interesting.

However, the Terminators really are ENTIRELY too easy to kill. The epic nature of the battles in previos incarnations are completely undermined by too many random T's being too quickly dispatched in almost every ep and in too great a variety of ways. It's hard to unring that bell now, but the writers need to toughen up the T's and force our heros to pull out all the stops to take them out. Doing that will allow less saturation T's into the past.

Just my opinion...
